Nearly 1 million children in the UK don't own a single book*. For a child, not having access to books means missing out on the joys of storytelling, the adventure of new worlds, and the learning opportunities that reading brings. Research shows that early childhood is a critical period for brain development, and reading plays a central role in that growth. Yet, many families are unable to provide this vital resource, affecting children's future success in life. This is why we are launching a fundraising campaign to increase our book stock for children. During an observation session at a school, I observed something that surprised me. Children were required to write their names on the materials using marker pens. One child didn't have a marker pen and asked for help, but none of the other children offered to assist. When I questioned why they wouldn't help, they said it was because their ink levels would decrease if they did. I was shocked by this response. As a parent, I believe it's important to teach children to share and help others. With the isolation they face, they are becoming increasingly narrow-minded. The best way to address this is by setting an example for them by practicing these values ourselves. We can encourage sharing and helping by: - Encouraging them to contribute to charities - Praising them when they share - Encouraging them to donate their old belongings Empathy and the willingness to help others are essential values for children and are what make us human.
