What do a truck and a tram have in common? Well, if you're on the A5 Autobahn in the south of Frankfurt maybe more than you think... Germany's "electric highway" is an innovative concept that allows hybrid trucks, like those from SCANIA, to recharge while driving by connecting to overhead cables using pantographs. It's a fascinating idea and certainly unique to spot on the road. However, despite travelling through Germany and seeing the overhead cables, I didn’t find any hybrid trucks using them. From what I’ve heard, this seems to be a common observation. It raises questions about how widely these systems are being adopted and their impact. Generally, I've heard mixed feedback on it not being used, being inefficient, costing too much, etc., but is there a future where we'll see more of this? NEW INSIGHT BLOG POST: DfT stats show major slowdown in new vehicle deliveries ZEBs reach 8.3% of total fleet but average age increases New figures released by the Department for Transport (DfT) as part of the Annual Bus Statistics show a slump in the delivery of new vehicles during 2023/24, as the average fleet age increased again. The statistics, based on operator returns, show that just 1.35% of the fleets were delivered during the year - representing 467 buses of various sizes. This compares with 1,582 in 2022/23 and an average of 2,500 plus between 2012 and 2018. As a consequence, the average fleet age stayed above 11 years and edged up once more. Germany's experimental electric highway to recharge hybrid trucks as they drive In 2019, Germany has introduced the first electric highway on its motorway system to recharge hybrid trucks as they drive. The ehighway is 6 miles long and is on the A5 motorway south of Frankfurt in the state of Hesse. As of December 2023, Germany is still operating electric highway (eHighway) test tracks in three locations: Schleswig-Holstein, Hesse, and Baden-Württemberg. The eHighway is a system that uses overhead wires to power heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) through dynamic charging. The trucks have batteries that can be recharged at depots or while driving under the overhead lines, allowing them to travel further distances electrically. This can help reduce emissions, especially when delivering freight outside of highways.
