Stupid Hackathon is growing up! This is a strange experience for me, let me tell you the story. Many moons ago I set up the first Stupid Hackathon Sweden over at Earth People (and later at Internetstiftelsen). It's always been immensely fun. Over the years I've also been able to invite some brands I was working with at the time, such as teenage engineering, Mathem, Comviq, And The Revolution and many more, who strangely enough always have understood what it all was about and played along. Last year SBAB played jury and gave out their prize (a rubik's cube with the same color on all sides) to their favorite (a muesli sorting machine built by someone who hated raisins). I've also set up micro-versions of Stupid Hackathon for Regeringskansliet, Utrikesdepartementet, Meepo and Berghs School of Communication. It's indeed strange that so many people actively seem to want to explore this creative space, and Stupid Hackathon has over the years become something I and others refer to. It's become some kind of thing. This November, Stupid Hackathon is evolving into a nationwide movement! It will take place in several cities in Sweden at once, with all cities acting autonomously. We share the common goal of being a hackathon for terrible ideas and we do it simultaneously over the course of 8'ish hours. From Try New Things multimedia studio in Skellefteå we'll set up some kind of TV studio in which we frame the event with an intro and an outro. IcaX is sponsoring with prizes and it's just really lovely to co-create this thing together with so many others. As of writing, we have events in Stockholm, Skellefteå, Norrköping and Karlstad and more TBC. If you have access to a space and/or is part of a community who would enjoy this — please reach out! The more the merrier. Ok wow that's a lot of text. I'm so happy about this, and well... in general. Cheerio. https://lnkd.in/dA7F9qnb

Have you offered your tech services for free? Do you or your team participate in Hackathons? Several firms where I've worked participated in hackathons, sometimes supporting non-profit solutions, helping college students hone their skills, or bringing innovations to life. Read this article by Julie Simpson on the value of sharing your expertise. Have you given away your services for a bigger cause?
The true value of participating in Hackathons is more than just winning first place. Read more about it in our latest article.

🚀 Hackathon 2024: Innovation, Collaboration, and Creativity in Action! This year marked the second edition of EVS's annual hackathon—a thrilling two-day event where 74 hackers and 15 coaches from Belgium, France, the Netherlands, the USA, and the UK came together to work on 12 innovative projects. Our hackathon isn’t just a competition—it’s an opportunity for our R&D teams to explore new ideas, collaborate with colleagues from across the globe, and push the boundaries of what’s possible. From integrating #GenerativeAI into our solutions to finding ways to reduce hardware power consumption, the projects reflect our commitment to #Innovation, #Sustainability, and #CustomerValue. This year, we introduced a new twist by focusing on the business impact of each project. Members of our Market & Solutions team provided valuable coaching, helping participants align their ideas with real-world challenges and opportunities. The event culminated in the presentation of the Jury and Audience Prizes, celebrating innovation, #Teamwork, and #Passion. 🎞️ Want to relive the energy, ideas, and excitement? At the end of 2024, we hosted the first hackathon at Medido - brand of Evondos Group and the energy was absolutely amazing! 🚀 The concept was simple: complete freedom. No predefined topics, no limits—just an open space to explore ideas and experiment. The goals? - Test proofs of concept for fresh ideas and features that don’t often make it to the roadmap. - Strengthen team bonds through cross-team collaboration. - Learn something new and, most importantly, have fun! 🎉 What stood out to me was that every single team achieved what they set out to try. That’s a huge win, especially since it was the first hackathon for many participants. The biggest takeaway people shared was how exciting it is to work with colleagues from other departments — it’s proof that great ideas truly happen at the intersection of perspectives. Some of the topics tackled were as diverse as they were impressive: 🧠 A machine learning algorithm to scan medical sachet data. A web simulator for the Medido dispenser. A fresh new user interface for the Medido clock. 📊 Enhancing our data pipeline to handle larger-scale challenges. Here’s how we made it real: 1️⃣ Pre-Hackathon: Teams formed and selected their ideas. 2️⃣ Hackathon Day: Teams pitched their ideas, spent the day bringing them to life, then showcased their demos. 3️⃣ Celebration: We wrapped up with pizza, voted for the winning team, and celebrated everyone's hard work. 🍕 The event was a reminder of the power of collaboration, creativity, and giving people the freedom to explore. While the prototypes might not change the world (yet), the impact on our culture is undeniable. If you still don't do the hackathons, start this month already! And if this sounds like the kind of environment you’d like to be part of — our R&D team will soon be growing! Keep an eye out. 👀 What’s the coolest idea you’ve seen come out of a hackathon? I'd love to hear about it!

Recently I participated in SIH's internal hackathon. It was more like the ideation phase of a project. Our problem statement was to do something to identify defects in the Science Museum's machines. We came up with a solution to make a robotic bird that would analyze thermal defects by thermal sensors, and internal effects by radiography, and visual defects by computer vision. Things I learned regarding teamwork and management from it. 1) In teamwork don’t be yes yes use Critical Thinking and Analysis to see what other people would see, and mistakes around them and discuss them with teammates and improve them. 2) If you have assigned work to someone don't look at what he is doing, it would give you stress. Look at the progress over time. Give your mates time.

We were challenged to create a solution that can impact Billions, and we did... 🛜2.6 Billion people across the world lack internet access. Lack of infrastructure combined with high costs, make it difficult for internet access to be expanded. 🤔 Here's a kicker: if you could make basic internet cheaper, would that alone enable the disprivileged to use modern technologies we see in the developed world? And the answer is: NO ❌ It doesn't matter if the internet is cheap, if it takes 10 years to load google. SO WHAT IF we could combine cheap internet and highspeed internet into a single package? That's where Laser Internet comes in. 👉 Laser-based internet aims to combine the cheapness of lasers with the speed of life, to bring the internet of tomorrow to life. 🚀 And against over 100 competitors at a moonshot hackathon hosted by The Knowledge Society (TKS), our prototype below helped our idea shine through and win the "best prototype award." 🤝 In less than 5 years from now, we could see this technology becoming the standard for internet access. Let's make it happen - Together! Shoutout to my teammates Hengbin Fang and Nathan Yan for making this happen, as well as The Knowledge Society (TKS) for enabling this journey. Wow! The invitations for our upcoming hackathon went out to the Tilda Community yesterday—and some categories are already full! 😲 At this follow-up hackathon, we’ll continue testing and refining the Behavioral Change Index—an index within Tilda that we're building with RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. This index is built to improve Tildas ability to predict the success of learning and change initiatives and give real-time feedback to adjust strategies along the way. 📅 November 28, 9:00-15:00, Stockholm What to expect this time: 🌟 Inspirational AI boost from "the man of values and possibilities" Johan Eriksson, Insights Leader at Google. 🌟 A beautiful venue hosted by our friends at Hyper Island—who’ve kindly sponsored the space. (Thank you Pär Hellstadius!) Looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting new ones as we explore the future of AI-driven change together. There are only a few spots left, so if you’re interested, take a look at the link in the comments! 🔗 Link in the comments.
