I had an engaging fireside chat with Dr. Abhishek Mathur and Dr. Abdur Rub on the pivotal role of green chemistry in drug discovery and development. The discussion explored how green chemistry principles and practices are shaping innovation and sustainability in the Pharma and Biopharma sectors. Dr. Abhishek Mathur delved into his work on continuous manufacturing and the integration of green solvents in biomanufacturing. He highlighted specific examples of regulations promoting the adoption of green chemicals, showcasing how these measures not only align with sustainability goals but also lead to improved economic efficiencies in production. Dr. Abdur Rub shared valuable insights on the transformative role of deep-tech R&D institutions, particularly academia, in driving the next generation of green manufacturing technologies. He highlighted groundbreaking advancements in areas such as biocatalysis and enzyme engineering, flow chemistry and continuous manufacturing, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) in drug discovery, and computational chemistry and in silico modeling. These innovations, he emphasized, are critical to accelerating the adoption of green chemistry in Pharma R&D. Additionally, Dr. Rub underscored the importance of process optimization techniques, such as predictive modeling and spent media analysis, in enhancing process efficiencies and minimizing waste, further reinforcing the case for a sustainable approach to drug development.
