A (very busy) month late to the party, but here are some updates from INNOTRANS 2024 in Berlin 😄 A frightening record 170.000 transportation people in one location! - The world is doing so much! What some are struggling with, others have long solved or do not need to consider, and what some are looking to solve now, others have long give up on from experience. Definitely do your homework before going to make sure you hear everyone's story! So, so much to learn. - A somewhat sad story for energy efficiency. Among the 2940 exhibitors, one really had to dig deep to find those interested in energy efficiency. People talk about fleet logistics, but not much about charging logistics. We still do not have answers or active discussions: How to electrify? How to charge and when and how much? And what to do with all the excess traction energy? - A sadder story for energy diversity! For those who are working on energy efficiency and savings, the search seems to have ended with Lithium ion batteries. Flywheels are almost not spoken of. Supercapacitors are almost unheard of. There are inarguable business cases for the last two over batteries and it's a shame not to see them get their spotlight yet. - Finally, nothing to kill your buzz after such a great public transportation experience than to face the reality of the timetables, delays, and ridiculous costs of international trains .. 👋 Feel free to reach out if you had any question on who was there or more details on what was being discussed around a certain topic.

Many of you would have started seeing posts about the upcoming InnoTrans in Berlin from Tue, 24 Sept 2024 – Fri, 27 Sept 2024 and rightly so since it is the biggest rail exhibition event in the world but what about the history of this event? Let’s do a quick recap! Origins (1996) InnoTrans was first held in 1996. It was launched as a specialised trade fair to bring together professionals from the transport technology sector. The primary focus was on rail transport, though it also covered other transportation technologies. The event was designed to showcase the latest innovations in transport technology, from rail vehicle manufacturing to signalling systems. Growth and Expansion (2000s) Throughout the 2000s, InnoTrans grew in size and scope. The event gained international recognition and started attracting participants from all over the world. New sectors like tunnel construction, passenger services, and public transportation were incorporated into the event. By this time, InnoTrans became a significant platform for industry experts, policymakers, and investors to exchange ideas and foster business partnerships. The turning point (2010) For the 2010 fair, organiser Messe Berlin Ltd announced an increase to 2,000 exhibitors from 44 countries, which covered the whole area of the exhibition centre for the first time. From there onwards, exhibitors showcased cutting-edge technologies like high-speed trains, autonomous systems, and energy-efficient rail solutions. The event began to serve as a global hub for transportation innovations, with delegations from various countries attending to discuss future trends in mobility. Modern Era (2020s) The COVID-19 pandemic affected the global events industry, and InnoTrans was no exception. The 2020 edition was postponed to 2022, where it returned with a focus on topics such as digitalisation, environmental sustainability, and the future of mobility. The event remains to date the largest and most influential railway trade fair in the world, shaping the future of transport technologies. 🎙 I had the pleasure of speaking at ACT Expo 2024, and since then had a few people reach out asking me about details on what was spoken at the Utility Workshop panel. What I can say is I was happily sharing industry insights alongside industry leaders like Chanel Parson, of Southern California Edison (SCE), Ahmad Choukair of Hitachi Energy, and Chris King of Siemens. Our panel focused on the critical role of strengthening Supply Chains for Infrastructure and in advancing the clean transportation sector. The panel ran close to two hours! (when it was scheduled for one) and had great audience participation. Here's some key takeaways from our discussion: 🔌Due to the need for higher power transformers and switchgear (as well as costs associated with them), which we all know carry long lead times (understated), the development of Innovative Technologies such as the implementation of Medium Voltage (MV) distribution and Solid-State Transformers are pivotal to the transition to #MCS. These technologies not only enhance the efficiency of EV charging infrastructure but also address long-standing challenges in the supply chain and deployment processes. 🤝 Collaboration is Key! Building strong relationships with utilities, manufacturers, and distributors is essential. In our example, Southern California Edison (SCE) proactive approach in partnering with stakeholders to streamline the deployment of EV infrastructure is a testament to this. Their efforts in helping to standardize equipment for EV Charging and bulk ordering have significantly reduced lead times and project costs. 🔧 Providing turnkey solutions can make EV infrastructure deployment easier and actually more affordable. By offering comprehensive packages that include everything from design to installation, Charge America, LLC. can accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles of all kinds from light to heavy duty, and ensure a smoother transition for all stakeholders. 🚀 Future-Proofing the Grid by planning for future needs is as important as addressing current demands.
