University of Melbourne lecturer, Jesse Olsen, was recently interviewed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and he's found that evidence is growing to suggest that RPGs (role-playing games) like Dungeons and Dragons help people develop skills for the workplace. Olsen found that "the game helped children improve their communication, self-awareness and critical thinking skills, and adults' team-building abilities developed by playing it." To people on the outside, Dungeons and Dragons and other similar RPGs may seem like a strange hobby. Rolling dice with more than 6 sides (and you never thought you'd ever use the word "dodecahedron" again, didn't you?), using magic and, in die-hard circles, attending conventions and games in full character costume. But there is more to this game, and others in this genre, than meets the eye. It's a game of strategy, calculated risk-taking, teaming up with others, playing the long game, and adapting to the unanticipated changes that try to thwart your best-laid strategies and scenario plans. People prepare for these events for weeks and in doing so, are inadvertently strengthening their transferrable skills of critical thinking, teamwork, communication, adaptability and ability to recognise an opportunity when it appears. What this emerging research is highlighting is that you don't have to wait until you start work to build these 'business' skills, and you don't have to rely only on your workplace to develop them as an adult. So perhaps it's time to ring a few friends, dust off that old box and get into a game of chance. PlayVS is pursuing a panel for the Game Industry track at SXSW 2025, discussing the mental health and academic benefits of esports as well as how organizations, like the NFL, can use esports to drive community engagement. The panel will consist of our CEO Jon Chapman, PlayVS Super Coach and coach of the year Aubree White from Bob Jones High School, and Renie Anderson, Chief Revenue Officer and EVP NFL Partnerships. If you've followed me for some time, you've come to know that I tend to dig my heels in as a parent when it comes to screen time and gaming. BUT, I'm slowly coming around to the idea that Esports and the careers surrounding it, aren't all that bad, if structured appropriately. Our students' learning environment and teaching modalities are changing to include gaming as a method of curriculum delivery. This weekend I got the opportunity to play the #FourinaLinetoy after almost four decade. This game is also known as #ConnectFour, is a two-player strategy game where players take turns dropping colored discs into a vertical grid. The objective is to be the first to connect four of your discs in a row, either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. #Importance: #CognitiveDevelopment: The game enhances strategic thinking, planning, and problem-solving skills as players must anticipate their opponent's moves and think ahead. #PatternRecognition: It encourages the recognition of spatial patterns, which is crucial in various mathematical and logical thinking tasks. #CriticalThinking: Players develop the ability to analyze situations quickly and make decisions, improving their overall reasoning skills. #SocialInteraction: As a two-player game, it promotes social interaction, teamwork, and sportsmanship among players, teaching the importance of fair play. #Fun and #Engagement: The simplicity of the rules makes it enjoyable for both children and adults, helping to develop patience and concentration.

From a young age, I have carried a passion for sports which has allowed me to gain many opportunities and learn hundreds of lessons. Last Spring, I enrolled in a class titled Gamification and Society. At the end of this course, I wrote a paper on gamification and how it relates to sports betting and fantasy sports. In a world filled with technology, these two markets are rapidly changing and capturing a new audience daily.
