Malnutrition is a major public health issue in Australia, particularly for older Australians. Research shows around 50% of older Australians in aged care and in the community are either at risk of malnutrition or are malnourished. This may be due to dental problems, psychological distress and/or dementia, certain medications, social isolation, and financial, shopping or cooking difficulties. Older people with malnutrition have a higher risk of falls, infection and pressure wounds. They may take a longer time to recover from illness or injury and can need more help with day-to-day tasks. They are also more vulnerable to disease and being admitted to hospital. An Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) can work with people who are either at risk of malnutrition or are malnourished. They can offer practical and personalised dietary advice to help them meet their nutritional needs and improve their emotional, physical and mental health. Use the Dietitians Australia search tool below to find a Dietitian to support your health needs: https://lnkd.in/dNzvtHg9 #MindBodyBrain #DietitiansWeek2024

Malnutrition is a global public health problem and one of the least addressed developing challenges in the world, especially among children. According to the World Health Organization malnutrition refers to deficiencies, excesses, and imbalances in the intake of nutrients. Global report from World Health Organization and UNICEF shows that in 2022, 149 million children under 5 were estimated to be stunted (too short for age), 45 million were estimated to be wasted (too thin for height), and 37 million were overweight or living with obesity. Nearly half of deaths among children under 5 years of age are linked to undernutrition. The target to achieve sustainable development goal two that talks about End All Forms of Malnutrition by 2030 has not been achieved 100% by any country as far as I know. As a public health practitioner, I and my group presented a topic on Childhood Malnutrition In India And United States in the university of Salford Manchester with recommendations that is applicable all over the world in the video extract below, this might be useful to your area of public health specialty. -Seun Omobobami-

Malnutrition in war-torn areas worsens already dire circumstances, weakening immune systems and increasing susceptibility to diseases. For children, it hinders physical and cognitive development, leading to potential long-term harm. Timely intervention can prevent health crises and support strained healthcare systems. Immediate actions involve distributing nutrient-rich emergency food supplies, tailored to meet diverse demographic needs. Ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) are vital for severely malnourished children. Long-term strategies focus on rebuilding food systems, promoting agricultural recovery, and ensuring sustainable food sources. Education and community kitchens empower healthier choices despite resource limitations. International aid organizations provide crucial resources and expertise for effective interventions, but collaboration with local communities is key for cultural relevance and addressing unique needs. Involving local governments and organizations is vital for sustainable solutions. In crisis situations, ensuring adequate nutrition is a moral obligation, preserving human dignity and offering affected populations hope for rebuilding. Nutritional intervention is not just humanitarian aid but a cornerstone for recovery and peace. Prioritizing nutritional intervention mitigates immediate malnutrition-related suffering and paves the way for healthier, more resilient communities post-conflict. Coordinated efforts are essential, combining immediate relief with sustainable solutions to alleviate suffering and support recovery. Addressing malnutrition in war crises is urgent, demanding a comprehensive approach for relief and sustainable outcomes. Only through holistic nutritional interventions can we alleviate suffering and aid the recovery of war-affected populations. #Malnutrition #NutritionalIntervention #HumanitarianAid #WarCrises #EmergencyRelief #SustainableDevelopment #GlobalHealth #FoodSecurity #ChildHealth #CommunityResilience #InternationalAid

Malnutrition in children under the age of two can have a far-reaching consequences on a child's physical, mental, and emotional development. Yet, assessing the nutritional status of these young children visually poses challenges, whether they are malnourished or overweight. To address this issue, FH Cambodia has partnered with local health center professionals to identify the nutritional status of under 2-year-old children using Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) measurements, enabling them to detect malnourished children in the area and provide timely nutrition advice and treatment. #HealthAndNutritionProgram #FlourishingCommunities #FHCambodia
