#Artificial #Intelligence for #health: #opportunities, #risks, and #governance: Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly Strategic Roundtable Artificial Intelligence #AI has the potential to transform #globalhealth by providing advanced tools for #surveillance, #drug development, administration, #diagnosis, #treatment, and #patient #care. It can improve access to services, address workforce shortages, and reduce health system #costs. But the success of AI depends on governance, #equity, #data, #regulations, #policies, and more. The rapid growth of AI underscores the urgent need for this roundtable, which will drive collaboration to harness AI for health, while ensuring a focus on #justice and #inclusion, and protections for #humanrights and #privacy. Aligning with WHO’s support to countries on the ##digital transformation of health systems, this roundtable aims to: -initiate discussions around a possible renewed Global Strategy on Digital Health and AI (2026-2030), -explore priorities for the Global Initiative on AI for Health (GI-AI4H); -identify priority areas for guidance, technical support and consensus-building; and distribute responsibilities across #stakeholders, including resource mobilization to support Member States in leveraging AI to strengthen health systems.   Speakers from #academia, #ministries of health and #information and #communications #technology, the regulatory and private sectors will review the state of the art of what is possible with AI in health and address key issues, including #publicprivate partnerships, national and regional regulatory oversight, and the investment case for AI in health system strengthening. Artificial Intelligence in Public Health: Readiness Assessment Toolkit New from Pan American Health Organization An extensive toolkit to help countries to assess and enhance their readiness for integration of AI in public health. Includes -Section 2 - Institutes self assessment across domains of governance, workforce, data, engagement, integration. Questions scored on a scale of 1-4, supported with qualitative analysis, this information would then be used against benchmarks/standards from international guidance to support a gaps analysis. To then inform action plans. -Section 3 - Critical thinking - spanning the future, sustainability, outcomes, impact, trust and more... -Section 4 - Q's to prompt multistakeholder engagement -Section 5 - key areas for successful implementation and much more... When it comes to #equity focus includes; "How will AI address current health disparities and promote equity in healthcare access and quality?" "How can we ensure that AI technologies benefit all segments of the population, including underserved and rural communities?" "What strategies can be employed to address the digital divide?" "How can we make AI tools accessible and user-friendly for healthcare providers at all levels?" How will solutions be coproduced with those working with vulnerable populations? "What exactly is WHO doing at the intersection of AI and health?" This is a question I often receive, and it's one I am passionate about answering. At the heart of our efforts is the Global Initiative on AI for Health, which aims to ensure that AI in health is harnessed effectively, safely, and ethically for everyone. Our approach is centered around three key pillars: 1️⃣ Governance and Regulation: Establishing guidelines and frameworks to ensure that AI tools are used responsibly and ethically. This includes developing standards that prioritize patient safety, transparency, and equity. 2️⃣ Knowledge Sharing: Empowering countries with the knowledge and tools they need to develop and integrate AI in health systems. From training courses like "Ethics and Governance of AI for Health" to more specialized modules, we are committed to bridging knowledge gaps. 3️⃣ Implementation and Localization: Collaborating closely with member states and governments to translate guidance into practice. This includes supporting countries in implementing AI-related frameworks, empowering the health workforce, and localizing solutions to meet specific country needs. These pillars are interconnected, ensuring that as AI innovations are developed, they are guided by robust governance structures, shared through targeted capacity-building efforts, and effectively implemented in real-world health systems.
