In many of my client quarterly planning sessions, we do an exercise I call “Personal Development” coaching. Each leader identifies one thing they want to improve about themselves, such as: - Getting better at asking for help - Doing a better job of engaging in debate on the team - Losing 20 pounds… It could be anything. Once identified, the team gives them coaching on ways to achieve these goals. The power of this seemingly simple exercise is threefold: 1. Each member of the leadership team gets help on something they want to improve. 2. By sharing something personal, the team practices vulnerability, becoming more comfortable sharing things they wouldn’t normally share, which builds familiarity and trust. 3. The team learns how to become better coaches…for each other and for their direct reports. By the way, better coaching isn’t about giving better advice, but asking better questions to get to the heart of the problem. This allows the leader to figure out the answers for themselves. If this third benefit helps them become better coaches, the exercise's benefits cascade to all levels of the organization, because leaders will be able to apply their new-found skill at asking questions and truly coaching members of their team. The best book I’ve ever read on coaching is "The Coaching Habit" by Michael Bungay Stanier—check it out here. "Why hire a business coach? It might not even be worth it." Leaders like Steve Jobs tell a different story. When we talk about "business coaching," a lot of people just brush it off as extra baggage. Somewhere, fear creeps in on them - 'What about the costs, the time, the sudden changes?' Many even consider it a sign of weakness. Ironically, a coach exposes you to such fears instead of letting them hold you back - which is exactly what it did for Steve Jobs as well. For Steve, working with a coach brought tons of improvements in his leadership style, decision-making skills, and self-awareness. A coach didn’t just help Steve Jobs become a better leader; it reshaped his perspective on business and life. He learned how to focus on what mattered most, build a culture that inspired creativity, and make decisions with clarity, not just speed. It’s not about adding “extra baggage” — it’s about refining your strengths, addressing your blind spots, and ultimately leveling up. Because here’s the truth: even the best leaders need guidance, feedback, and sometimes a push to see things they can’t see themselves. So, is coaching worth it? If it was for Jobs, imagine what it could do for you. Ready to take the leap? #business #growth #coaching

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬? 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧. As someone who’s spent 30 years in the CEO chair and now works as a business coach, I’ve heard it all: “𝑪𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒔 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒇𝒍𝒖𝒇𝒇.” “𝑪𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒈𝒈𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔.” “𝑰𝒇 𝑰’𝒎 𝒂 𝑪𝑬𝑶, 𝑰 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒂𝒍𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒚 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈.” Let’s bust those myths, shall we? 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡 𝟏: 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 Yes, coaching might give you that push, but it’s much more than a pep talk. A good coach holds up a mirror, guiding you to find the blind spots you can’t see yourself. It’s about strategy, accountability, and unlocking your full potential—not just cheering from the sidelines. 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡 𝟐: 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐄𝐎𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 The reality? The best leaders invest in coaching before the cracks appear. It’s not a sign of weakness; it’s a commitment to growth. Even high-performing CEOs know there’s always more to learn, especially in a world that never stops changing. Steve Jobs and Larry Page both had business coaches! Both coached by Bill Campbell. 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡 𝟑: 𝐈𝐟 𝐈’𝐦 𝐚 𝐂𝐄𝐎, 𝐈 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 I used to believe this one, too. But the truth is, leadership isn’t about knowing it all—it’s about knowing how to ask the right questions, listen, and adapt. Coaching brings a fresh perspective, helping you make better decisions without the ego trip. So, if you’re still thinking coaching is something you don’t need, maybe it’s time to think again. 🤔 #leadership #businesscoaching #CEO #growthmindset #strategy #personaldevelopment

I was leading an executive team coaching session the other day. My intention for the session was to lift them out of survival mode, and “small” thinking. One phrase that I said stuck with the group more than anything else and that was “most people want to not be poor, more than they want to be rich”. In saying that, my intention is to see what people interpret that to mean. My point is to demonstrate that: ✋🏼 Most people want to avoid pain more than they want to achieve the thing that they say they want ✋🏼 Most are focused on the NEGATIVE aspect more than the POSITIVE aspect Or as my one of the group let it sink in for him, he interpreted it as “most people play not to lose, rather than playing to win” There is a BIG difference between these two things. Focus on the negative i.e. survival, not losing, not failing etc and you will always keep yourself small. You will inhibit potential growth. Always create this cycle of stress and worry. Focus on the positive, and since you’re focused on winning (i.e. growth). You will start to see your challenges as a temporary state and the fact that you will overcome your current struggles is simply an inevitable consequence of you winning. Many see coaching/personal development as an expense (that’s playing not to lose). But it is an investment that you expect to produce ROI (playing to win). If you want to win, you take calculated risks, expecting a reward. A simple step process to get what you want: ✊🏼 Decide you’re playing to WIN and know why you want to win (this is important too – arbitrary goals won’t cut it) ✊🏼 Visualise yourself winning ✊🏼 Make decisions aligned with winning, rather than out of fear of losing ✊🏼 Do the work The ability to envision is a core leadership skill. What are you doing to flex that muscle? I'm currently taking on 2x 1-2-1 clients, to start in September. And I will also be working with companies who want coaching for their leadership team. Book a possibility call to see if we’re a fit https://lnkd.in/e6bp9vfu #leadershipskills #executivecoaching #leadershipcoaching #CEO
