New product or product development? We learn from experience and when we started out we had none which was exciting at the time. Now we have that experience the team started packing our new gift box last night. When we began we followed the crowd and put an average label onto a glass bottle which didn't really stand out. Who can tell what is in the glass bottle with a blue label? Did we really think about the impact of what we were creating at the time? No we were just excited to have a product with our brand on it. Today the bottle has changed to 100% recycled aluminium. The branding is now much clearer, the carbon footprint has been reduced now that we are in a more sustainable bottle that weighs a fraction of the glass bottle. Plus they look fabulous. All great things. But what has not changed is the award winning gin that is inside the bottles. #recycle #reuse #sustainable #retail #travel

Sustainability and environmentally friendly solutions do not stop with the choosing of the package. I see this mistake with brands time and time again, and I think it is because often the departments within brands are siloed. But, once you choose the package, you also have to consider it's weight and distance from where you need it to be. If you choose a large, heavy bottle manufactured in China for instance, and your filling facility is in France, you are spending a lot of money to ship air. The logistics of it all is also detrimental to our planet. Eurovetrocap has a line of light glass bottles and jars. This lessens the energy needed to ship these goods. Paper-based packaging initiative for toilet roll subscription DS Smith has collaborated with Oceans, a UK-based company known for its plastic-free toilet tissue and kitchen towels, to develop a new packaging solution aligned with Oceans’ sustainability mission. The initiative is aimed to encourage customers to embrace Oceans’ subscription offer, ensuring the packaging remains plastic-free and 100% recyclable. DS Smith designed a range of introductory packs, focusing on reducing waste and space while enhancing the customer experience. Featuring brand introductions, Oceans’ messaging, and a QR code for discounts, the packaging saw over half of Oceans’ customers making repeat purchases or additional orders. It is claimed that this collaboration reflects a growing consumer interest in sustainable alternatives for everyday essentials, with a focus on maintaining functionality and brand values. Have sustainability businesses missed the boat? Yesterday I went to the best Asian fusion restaurant in my area to get my belated birthday dinner… Styrofoam to-go containers have been banned in WA… And the owner said, “They banned styrofoam, but what’s the point? Plastic’s not any better…” Why not use eco-friendly, compostable alternatives? (And if you have a version that won’t dry out the food, highlight that benefit!) “Filling bellies, not landfills.” Catchy, right? (Seriously, free idea… Test the heck out of it and let me know how it works for you.) The data says consumers are willing to spend more on eco-friendly brands. But many smaller, local brands and franchises don’t have the experience, expertise, or staffing to research their options… They’re going for the easy option.
