🏈 "Do you want to be a star, or do you want to be a champion?" 🏆 In sports and business, great leadership is never about one person – it’s about the team. Further, leadership isn't limited to formal roles such as #Coach or #CEO. Whether you're on the field or in the boardroom, leadership is about influence and impact, regardless of your role. This Harvard Business Review article draws from Tom Brady's team leadership insights. Through powerful stories and real-life examples, Brady (in collaboration with Harvard Business School Professor Nitin Nohria) breaks down the art of leading teams in sports and business. It's long but worth the read. Here are his 7 key leadership lessons: ⭐️ Put the Team First – Even when facing setbacks, the team goal comes first. ⭐️ Appreciate the Unsung Heroes – Acknowledge those who often go unnoticed. ⭐️ Set the Standard for Effort – Push beyond the norm and create a culture of excellence. ⭐️ Understand Individual Motivations – Recognize each teammate’s unique drive. ⭐️ Complement Leadership Styles – Balance your style with that of formal leaders. ⭐️ Counteract Self-Serving Forces – Identify and neutralize pressures that disrupt unity. ⭐️ Build Connections Beyond Work – Shared experiences off the field build trust and stronger bonds. Brady further explores what drives team dynamics in the "What Helps—and What Gets in the Way" section: 🛠️ Character is Hard Wired Changing a teammate's character is tough—most team-oriented habits are rooted in early life experiences. 🛠️ Leaders Operate Within Systems Teams thrive on processes, protocols, and culture. 🛠️ Scaling Leadership is Hard Influencing change in large organizations requires time and trust. 🛠️ Leadership Evolves Over Time Great leaders adapt and grow with their team and environment. Ultimate Takeaway? There’s an enormous upside not just for sports teams but any organization when strong team leaders emerge. Better leaders lead to better results, and a culture where employees are engaged and genuinely enjoy the process. 💡 https://lnkd.in/gQAJWmhS #Leadership #Teamwork #ScaleUp #LearningAndGrowth

Leadership is a team sport. I admit to my bias on this point. I think that to be successful in today's context teamwork, collaboration, and the character, sensibilities, and skills that support these notions are essential. Further, in this complex world and business environment, no one person has the depth and breadth of expertise (wisdom) to lead an organization. We need serious expertise (deep research-based knowledge and broad experience) at the table in the fields of finance, operations, revenue (sales/marketing), technology, and people. It is the collision of these various perspectives around the leadership table that produces to the innovative solution, the best way to lead the organization and achieve the organizational outcomes. This interview between Tom Bradey and Nitin Nohria on teamwork, leadership within teams, and achieving success together challenges the ambitious, self orientation of career advancement so prevalent in senior ranks today. Brady points to 7 keys in his own leadership and success. A Team-Focused Philosophy Leadership comes down to two things: - Do you care about your teammates and their role on the team? - And do you care about winning, which is what you’re ultimately trying to do together? 1. Put the team first, always, even when facing personal adversity. 2. Show appreciation for unsung colleagues. 3. Set the standard and create a culture of 100% effort. 4. Recognize teammates’ individual psychology and the best ways to motivate them. 5. Understand and complement the style of the formal leader. 6. Recognize and counteract the external forces that can cause selfish behavior. 7. Create opportunities to connect as people outside the office. Leadership is dependent upon context. The context changed and so must our understanding of leadership. It is now a team sport! https://lnkd.in/gsWGSM_q #leadership #culture #teamwork

HALLO, LEADERSHIP?! ☎ Another one of my role model's, mentor's, hero's - Tom Brady - take on this super important topic. 1. Put the team first, always, even when facing personal adversity 2. Show appreciation for unsung colleagues 3. Set the standard and create a culture of 100% effort 4. Recognize teammates’ individual psychology and the best ways to motivate them 5. Understand and complement the style of the formal leader 6. Recognize and counteract the external forces that can cause selfish behavior 7. Create opportunities to connect as people outside the office What Gets in the Way 1. The emotions and behaviors that define individuals are formed early 2. Leaders work within a system 3. It can be hard for individual team leaders to influence change across large organizations 4. A leader’s style and influence will take time to evolve "What can get lost in this way of thinking is that leaders don’t accomplish anything by themselves. In fact, nothing of significance in life is achieved alone. To do great things, we rely on teammates. And to win, team leaders must find ways to draw the best physical, mental, and emotional performance from the players, employees working with them." "As a society, we’ve moved away from having those frank conversations. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to recognize that when people give me tough love and tell me the truth, it’s often the best sign that they really care about me." “I don’t give a f— what the coach says.” We needed to work harder because it mattered to us, not just give enough effort to satisfy the coach. #culturedrivers #leaders #lead #team #skill #leadership #teamcentric #kindergarten #character #mentalflexibility #letsgo

As a leader who values sports as a powerful tool for teaching leadership, Tom Brady’s “The Art of Leading Teammates” offers valuable insights into the core of a “team-first” philosophy. While some elements may seem familiar, it’s a timely reminder of the importance of selflessness, communication, and trust in building successful teams. Whether in sports or business, these lessons are essential for any leader striving to elevate their team’s performance. Selflessness: Prioritizing the needs and success of the team over individual achievements. Leaders and team members focus on collective goals rather than personal accolades. Communication: Open, honest, and consistent communication is vital. It ensures that everyone is on the same page, understands their roles, and feels valued within the team. Accountability: Holding oneself and others accountable for their actions and contributions. This fosters a culture of trust and reliability, where everyone knows they can count on their teammates. Support: Providing encouragement and assistance to teammates, both on and off the field (or in and out of the office). This builds strong bonds and reinforces the idea that the team is stronger together. Trust: Developing deep trust among teammates, where each person knows that others will fulfill their responsibilities. This trust is built through consistent actions and shared experiences. As we continue to lead, it’s crucial to revisit these foundational principles and remember that context matters. Whether you’re guiding a sports team or navigating a complex business environment, applying the right leadership approach at the right time is key. The “team-first” mindset, when adapted to the unique dynamics of each situation, will always be the key to lasting success. Let’s keep pushing each other to grow and succeed together. #Leadership #Teamwork #TeamFirst #ContextMatters #ElevateYourTeam https://lnkd.in/gZxktYqN

🚀 **Two Must-Reads on Leadership** 🏆: Tom Brady and Nitin Nohria’s powerful Harvard Business Review article on leading teammates, and Ryan Estis & Chad Estis’s insightful *Prepare for Impact*. Whether you're on the field or in the boardroom, true long term success is anchored in three core principles: **Empathy, Trust, and Purpose**. This reflection took me back to a class with Deborah Crown, who has worked with legends like Nick Saban. Her lessons on leadership, from nearly 20 years ago, continue to resonate and shape my approach today. Here's a brief summary of the common threads linking the HBR article and Prepare for Impact: 💡 **Empathy**: Understanding teammates inside and outside of "work" is crucial. Knowing what and how to motivate them unlocks their potential. 🔥 **Leading by Example**: Great leaders position teams for success by doing the extra work themselves and bringing others along with them. Nothing is too big or too small. 🔗 **Trust and Accountability**: Trust is the bedrock of a strong team. Understanding and supporting your teammates builds trust. Leading by example builds accountability. High standards, paired with trust and accountability, push teams to greatness. 🌎 **Purpose and Impact**: Clear communication and a strong sense of purpose are non-negotiable for long-term success. Your purpose is where you are going and your impact is what will happen when you get there. Remind yourself and the team of those things daily! Tom, Nithin, Ryan and Chad all agree, leadership is a responsibility to uplift, empower, and inspire those around us. As John C. Maxwell wrote, "Nothing of significance was ever achieved by an individual acting alone." Check out the HBR article and Ryan and Chad's book for more - both are incredible reads. #Leadership #TeamBuilding #Empathy #ServantLeadership #PurposeDriven #Culture #GrowthMindset #Humancenteredleadership https://lnkd.in/gGFhunJa

Leadership isn’t just about holding a position of authority; it’s about guiding and inspiring others to reach their full potential. Successful leaders share certain behaviors and traits that set them apart. Among these, curiosity, emotional intelligence, and storytelling are particularly impactful. 🔍𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 drives leaders to constantly seek new knowledge and perspectives. It’s the engine behind innovation and adaptability. Leaders who are curious are always learning, asking questions, and exploring new possibilities, which enables them to stay ahead of the curve. 💡𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, on the other hand, allows leaders to connect with their teams on a deeper level. By understanding and managing their own emotions, as well as those of others, emotionally intelligent leaders create a positive and productive work environment. This trait is crucial for effective communication, conflict resolution, and team cohesion. 🎙️𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 is a powerful tool that leaders use to convey their vision and values. A well-told story can inspire action, foster connection, and make complex ideas more relatable. The importance of making realistic planning
The importance of keeping promises... As the renowned quote wisely states, "When you make a commitment, you build hope, when you keep it, you build trust." In leadership, promises are not merely words; they are the cornerstone of trust, integrity, and collaboration. When leaders make commitments, they are not just setting expectations; they are fostering a sense of hope and belief within their teams. This hope becomes the driving force that propels individuals to strive for excellence and contribute their best efforts. However, the true test of leadership lies in the follow-through. Keeping promises is the catalyst that transforms hope into trust. When leaders honor their commitments, they demonstrate reliability and accountability, laying the groundwork for a culture of mutual respect and transparency. Trust, once earned, becomes the bedrock of effective leadership. It creates an environment where open communication flourishes, team members feel empowered, and collective goals are pursued with unwavering dedication. The ripple effect of trust extends beyond immediate team dynamics, influencing the overall organizational culture and fostering enduring success. As leaders, it's crucial to recognize that promises are not just transactional agreements; they are the foundation of leadership credibility. Consistent commitment and follow-thro breed a culture of accountability that resonates throughout the organization, inspiring teams to align with shared objectives and pursue excellence collectively. To conclude, the journey from commitment to trust is a powerful one, and an important foundation of effective leadership.
