In my latest article for Naavik I discuss the challenges Ubisoft is facing. Following the release of Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft's stock has plunged by a third, hitting its lowest point since 2014. This decline stems from years of rising expenses, franchise fatigue, and a struggle to keep up with new gaming trends. With calls for restructuring and leadership change growing, the company must act decisively to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving industry. Check out my full article for a deeper dive!

Here's GameDiscoverCo's list of 'trending' unreleased Steam games, Nov 25th-Dec 2nd, 2024*. And look, Path Of Exile 2 was #1 yet again, and we're predicting a huge Early Access launch, but otherwise: - the Tencent-funded, controversially Horizon Zero Dawn-ish survival crafting game Light Of Motiram made it to #2, after launching its Steam page. - F2P multiplayer hero shooter Marvel Rivals boinked back up to #5, because it's finally out this week. - Chinese-developed zombie city survival-er Last Remains (#6) also made a strong impression, but almost entirely in Asia. Also notable: new entries for Ubisoft's latest Anno citybuilder, Anno 117: Pax Romana (#11) and parkour game STORROR Parkour Pro (#14), as well as a resurgence for DRG spinoff Deep Rock Galactic: Rogue Core (#12) due to a new teaser trailer. Subscribers to the GameDiscoverCo Plus 'basic' or enhanced data tiers can access this data daily here - https://lnkd.in/gYJ-Z3_2 - including sorting by tag, release status, etc. (*by Steam follower increase in the last 7 days.)

Ubisoft has announced exciting plans for the future of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, promising free updates with new content and modes in the coming months. The acclaimed Metroidvania game received praise from critics upon its January release, with Eurogamer's Christian Donlan describing it as a "real delight" in a four-star review. Despite potentially lower commercial success, Ubisoft is committed to expanding the game's offerings. In a video message shared on social media by Lost Crown director Mounir Radi, fans were thanked for their support, with Radi expressing joy at seeing players enjoy the game. He revealed that the development team has ambitious plans for the future, including free updates with additional content and new modes to challenge players and enhance their experience. Radi hinted that the first of these updates would be arriving "soon," encouraging players to train with Artaban and attempt to conquer the game in Immortals mode in preparation for the new challenges ahead. Philippe Tremblay, director of subscriptions for the prominent video game publisher Ubisoft, expressed a rather disturbing outlook on the evolution of digital ownership in gaming. He suggested that consumers need to get “comfortable” with the concept of no longer owning the games they purchase. Tremblay's remarks came during a discussion about the challenges facing Ubisoft’s subscription service, Ubisoft+—a model similar to Netflix but tailored for fans of iconic franchises like “Assassin’s Creed.” However, these comments resonated beyond the scope of the company, casting a shadow over the future of digital media ownership as a whole—or the illusion of ownership, to be exact. #ubisoft #videogames #ownership #digitalmedia FULL STORY: www.thecapitalculture.com
