In light of the evolving landscape of film consumption, it's clear that the industry is shifting away from a one-size-fits-all model, acknowledging that audiences now have diverse preferences for how they experience storytelling. With the widespread adoption of 4K large screens and advanced sound systems in homes, some films are now being crafted specifically for in-home viewing. These may feature characteristic tailored to this environment. Additionally, with the advent of devices like Apple's ProVision, some films will be made for a more dramatic immersive personal experiences that leverages this viewing technology. Conversely, certain films will still be designed with the theatrical experience in mind, capitalizing on the unique communal atmosphere that only cinemas can provide. This bifurcation signifies a broader transformation within the industry, leading to a richer variety of storytelling methods and greater opportunities for creators and audiences alike. Theaters, in response, would do well to heed Theodore Levitt's advice and reconsider their core business proposition. It's no longer just about movies in theaters, but about showcasing the movie viewing experience to audience whether it is in-theaters, in-home, or directly in the viewers eyes through an in-goggle immersive experience. Ultimately, it's about curating the movies to audiences. By embracing this paradigm, theaters can remain relevant and vital in an increasingly segmented market.
He makes a lot of good points. Worth reading in full. "Martin Scorsese expanded upon his opinions on the current state of cinema during a press conference at the Berlin Film Festival, where he is receiving an Honorary Golden Bear. When asked if cinema could be dying, Scorsese said he prefers to think of the industry as “transforming.” “I don’t think it’s dying at all, no. I think it’s transforming,” Scorsese said. “It never was meant to be one thing. We were used to it being one thing. I grew up [with cinema] as one thing: if you wanted to see a movie you went to a theater. A good theater or a bad theater, but it was a theater. It was always a communal experience.”" https://lnkd.in/eXgfttVt

These screens were advertising upcoming films at Cineworld Cinemas Ltd in the VIP lounge today (watched 'Mamma Mia' for my Mother's Day treat 😀) As the sound was very low, they displayed captions, so this got me thinking... 🤔 🎬 Would captions bother you at the cinema, or help? 🎬 Why can't captions be a regular feature? 🎬 Would captions spoil the film for you? I go to the cinema and theatre quite a lot, despite lack of (or absolute zero) captioned performances, but I still go, regardless. But... If sound wasn't available for films/shows, or stopped halfway through, can you imagine the chaos, carnage and complaints from the public? Captions are essential to my understanding of TV shows, films, theatre shows etc, as they provide context to fill in the gaps that I miss (for example, speech is provided but also extra information like: 'dog barking in distance', 'footsteps approaching' or 'baby crying'). What are your thoughts on captions? I need them for anything that has sound, so is that too much of an ask? My frustrating issues with captions... Zoom: I pay a monthly fee for my account, but have to pay an additional £3 per month for captions to be included in all meetings/online training 😡 Jury service: If I was called up for jury service, I wouldn't be allowed my phone to display live captions so ultimately I wouldn't be able to hear the defendant and other parties speaking. I would be allowed to still attend, but I would have to decline as it wouldn't seem fair as a process that I haven't heard correctly 😡 Also, for anyone that uses sign language (I don't), they would be allowed to have an interpreter in the courtroom but not in the deliberation room where the main verdict is discussed 😡 Interested in your thoughts on any of this 😁 #captions #subtitles #texttospeech #cinema #theatre #movies #tv #sound #context #discrimination #disability #deaf #hardofhearing #hearingloss
