The more I’ve been involved in building products, the more I see this one undeniable truth: shortcuts don’t work. Sure, skipping steps might feel like progress at the moment, but the curse of product development is this: if you’re not patient enough to follow the right process, you’ll still come back to it. I’ve seen it firsthand. There’s always that rush to launch, to ship something fast, to show stakeholders we’re “making progress.” And trust me, I get it. Deadlines loom, expectations rise, and nobody wants to be the person slowing things down. So, we cut a corner here, ignore a detail there, thinking, It’s fine, we’ll deal with it later. Spoiler alert: later always shows up. I remember one project where we rushed the design phase. Instead of fully fleshing out user needs, we made assumptions to save time. It worked for about two weeks. Then the bugs started rolling in, the user feedback was brutal, and we realised our assumptions were way off. We had to go back, redo the research, and basically start over. All the “time” we thought we saved? It cost us double to fix the mess. Processes exist for a reason. They’re not just boxes to tick; they’re there to protect you from yourself. Whether it’s gathering user feedback, refining requirements, or stress-testing a feature, skipping steps doesn’t make them disappear; it just delays the inevitable. The hardest part of product development isn’t the work itself; it’s the patience to trust the process. It’s holding yourself back from saying, “This is good enough,” when deep down, you know it’s not. It’s having the discipline to plan, iterate, and test properly, even when you’re itching to move forward. So, here’s the truth: you can’t outrun the process. You might think you’ve found a faster route, but eventually, the gaps will catch up with you. And when they do, you’ll realise you’ve been running in circles. Follow the process. 💡Defining the Minimum Viable Product, Craft Your MVP💡 In product development, efficiency is key in any program. Defining scope and requirements is one of the most important tasks before any work should be completed. A common misstep is assuming that your product requires every feature possible to remain competitive in the market. Avoiding Feature Overload The truth is that features for the sake of features often lead to higher costs and disappointed customers. The goal should be to choose the right features based on what your users actually need—even if they don’t know it yet. This is where exercises like voice of the customer interviews and surveys can provide insights into the existing market and allow you to view the problem with a more objective lens. Understanding Customer Needs We all like to think that we know our needs well and that the products in our lives fulfill our needs. The truth is that even many of our favorite products have pain points, some that we might not even realize. Is the button in an awkward location? Is the product too big for typical counter space? Is it too loud? What sensory feedback does the product provide? Defining the MVP All of these considerations should lead to a goal—defining the minimum viable product. The MVP is the version of your product with the highest return on investment versus risk. It includes only the essential features that address the core needs of your users. By focusing on the MVP, you can: ➡ Reduce Development Costs: By concentrating on essential features, you avoid the costs associated with unnecessary extras. ➡ Speed Up Time to Market: A well-defined MVP allows you to launch sooner and start gathering user feedback, which is crucial for iterative improvements. ➡ Improve Customer Satisfaction: Delivering a product that meets the core needs of your users leads to higher satisfaction and loyalty. ➡ Innovate and Iterate: The feedback from customers will ultimately lead to the next product (e.g. the product doesn’t need to be perfect at launch).
