The streets are supposed to be a safe place for people. When designing childhood-friendly streets with safety in mind, several factors should be considered. Firstly, ensuring proper visibility by strategically placing streetlights and minimizing blind spots. Additionally, implementing traffic calming measures such as speed bumps and pedestrian crossings. Creating designated play areas separated from vehicular traffic and incorporating clear signage. Moreover, prioritizing sidewalks and pedestrian pathways, with ample space for strollers and wheelchairs, promotes safe mobility. Finally, involving community members, including children, in the design process can provide valuable insights. Incorporating elements of fantasy and imagination into the design and architecture of childhood-friendly streets can ignite creativity and inspire exploration for kids. Utilizing whimsical shapes, vibrant colors, and interactive installations can transform ordinary spaces into magical realms that encourage imaginative play. From fantastical sculptures to themed play structures, integrating elements that spark curiosity and wonder can turn a simple stroll down the street into an adventure. By blending functionality with creativity, designers can create environments that not only prioritize safety but also stimulate the imagination and enrich the experiences of children in the community. https://lnkd.in/e-kydw-N #ArchitectureInspiration #ChildhoodDesigns #FantasyArchitecture #CreativeSpaces #ImaginativeDesigns #PlayfulArchitecture #StreetsOfWonder #WhimsicalDesigns #InspireCreativity #DreamySpaces #UrbanFantasy #MagicInDesign #EnchantingArchitecture #DesignForKids #ImaginationStation #StreetSculptures #ColorfulCommunities #PlayfulLandscapes #ArchitecturalAdventure #CommunityCreativity

Quadratic growth in action! This brings to mind the math problem of computing the area inside a thin ring formed by two concentric circles with similar radii. Having fewer rooms in your design will result in more actual living space! Keep that in mind the next time you talk to your architect.
Square Footage: What You See is NOT Always What You Get! Ever wondered why the square footage on your architectural drawing doesn't match up with reality? Our customer did, and what we discovered might surprise you. Those 6'' walls? They're not just physical barriers but also 'space eaters' in your home's square footage. It's a common oversight that can significantly impact the actual living space available. Check out the attached image showing how much living space is actually lost to walls in a typical room. Yes, it's that impactful! So, the next time you're eyeing a new place, remember: the listed square footage is just part of the story. Always dig deeper and ask for the usable living space. #RealEstateRealities #UsableLivingSpace #BeyondTheNumbers #trisetra

Presenting Sara Anwar’s design for an Artists Residency as part of 3rd year Architecture Design Studio. The project sensitively explores a manifesto of empathy in architecture – resulting in an experiential design that engages the senses of the user to create a memorable experience that intricately assigns importance to the users’ needs and comforts. The residency was designed for painters and poets as the primary users, and hence, their needs were given the utmost priority. Senses were engaged for the users to meaningfully connect, not only with themselves, but each other and nature. It also allows users to heal, utilizing art in a therapeutic manner, and to bridge the gap between artists and public, aiming to tackle the primary problems artists face with their art. The complex is divided into three zones – public zone, for admin, café, and art therapist; work zone, for artists to provide flexible and variety of workspaces, including a Mehfil for poets and a library; living zone, with pods for the artists with an adjacent lounge and therapeutic gardens. All these spaces are designed to generate an experience, essentially through biophilia by engaging the sense of sight (framing views), hearing (nature sounds & high ceilings), scent (lavender & rose) and touch (natural textures – clay plaster, wood and stone) - #studentwork #nust #architecture #architecturaldesign #architecturalproject

We are all familiar with doctors that take care of the body and the soul. As designers we are 'DOCTORS OF SPACE'... and because of that caretakers of life. While analyzing the spatial context and imagining a future infill of a project site, we use the CROSS-SECTION as a tool to slice through the 'BODY'. It's a useful medium for several reasons. A section shows spatial CONNECTIONS that transcend the flat plan. It shows the relation with the direct and wider context, between the outside and the inside. The RHYTHM between open and built spaces reveals itself in the waveline of the 'OUTER SKIN'. This skyline helps to feel the density - urban grain & breathing space. You easily get a SCALE reference between the existing surroundings and the new design; and the scales in the design on itself - human < neighborhood < city. The section also has the ability to 'LOOK INSIDE'. The programme is an indicator of the LIVELINESS one can expect during day and night, related to the 4 seasons. For us, it is the generator of a project, not the resultant of a design. The urban, landscape cross-section depicts life, flow, light and air in the site. #lips_lifepeoplespace #virtualreality #section #researchbydesign #spacedoctor #connections #humanscale #liveliness

In the realm of architecture and design, the harmonious application of color theory goes beyond mere aesthetics; it profoundly impacts the human psyche and sense of comfort within a space. From the calming effect of cool tones to the energizing properties of warm hues, the psychological parameters of color play a pivotal role in shaping our emotional response to our surroundings. As architects, we wield color as a powerful tool, creating environments that evoke specific moods and enhance overall well-being. By understanding the psychological effects of color, architects can strategically employ hues to influence behavior and improve quality of life. Whether it's fostering creativity in workspaces through the use of stimulating colors or promoting relaxation in residential settings with soothing palettes, the thoughtful application of color theory enhances not only the visual appeal of a space but also its functionality and comfort. Let's harness the transformative power of color to craft environments that resonate with our innate human experiences and enrich our lives. #ColorTheory #Architecture #DesignPsychology #HumanComfort #interiordesign

The High Line, New York “On the High Line, everything was hyper present. The scale is so intimate that your focus is amplified” - Lisa Switkin, James Corner Field Operations A weekend reading about the High Line. The best part of the book is the section on the process of making the High Line - the interview with the designers. The absence of precedent gave them the opportunity to think differently. The focus was very much on the visitor experience - the lightings are mounted at waist length that they didn’t interfere with the night views of the city, the seating of different types and some with wheels so that visitors can choose to sit alone or with someone else by rearranging the seats, the beam discovery playground where children could inspect the railway beams and play at the same time, etc. I love their landscape design - the concept of going wild, where the plants could “grow out/ around” the structures along the High Line, blurring the line between hardscape and softscape. Every segment looks different. “The idea was that the design would not be subservient to prior programming, but the programming would follow the design. The design provided “settings” that would both inspire and support a variety of programs”. - James Corner The whole idea of promenading, a simple walk could be seen from the design of the linear space, starting from the carefully planned entrances that were designed based on the duration to get to the High Line and the experience of entering the space. The design of simplicity… #highline #nyc #landscaping #landscapearchitecture #adaptiveuse #urbandesign #urbanplanning #urbanism #publicspaces #placemaking

1730 ARCHITECTURAL MASS VOLUME and DENSITY -Gautam Shah https://lnkd.in/dMezchaw Architectural entities occupy a space within a larger space, as much as these entities form a space to dwell in or stay with. In both the instances, the apparent sizes are modulated with increase or decrease of the functional volume. Functional volume of an exterior object is an occupation exploited, for greater visual presence, domination, lasting impression, as an asset to accommodate many elements and details and form an encompassing and unifying umbrella. Functional volume of a dwell-in or stay-with space, are extended beyond their domain edges. Such spatial transgressions add to the visual surfaces.

This is why preserving a Home, is Honoring Its Story 🏡✨ In a recent conversation with principal architect Carina Coel, we explored the delicate balance between honoring the past and creating for the future. As part of a project with Restructure Studio, we discussed how preserving the existing home wasn’t just about maintaining its structure—it was about preserving its soul. Carina shared insightful thoughts on how she was able to expand this home in a way that felt like a natural evolution rather than an interruption. By carefully considering the design, materials, and form, she ensured that the new additions seamlessly blended with the original architecture, making it seem as though they had always been part of the home. This approach emphasizes the importance of thoughtful, sensitive design—one that celebrates the history of a space while adapting to modern needs. 🌿 Key takeaways: - Preservation isn’t just about keeping the old—it’s about making the old and new coexist harmoniously. -Thoughtful expansion can allow a home to grow and evolve while still feeling rooted in its history. -Architecture isn’t just about the physical structure—it’s about maintaining the stories, memories, and experiences tied to that space. Thank you Carina for sharing your expertise with me. Special thanks to my husband Gustavo Bernal from Gus Bernal: Film+Photo+Education for capturing this conversation. #Architecture #Design #Preservation #SustainableDesign #HomeExpansion #RestructureStudio #ArchitecturalDesign #womeinarchitecture #BuildingHistory #preservationaustin Preservation Austin Alex McVey
