🚀 Getting Depressive or Future Positive? As DLD Conference celebrates its 20th anniversary (congratulations, Steffi Czerny!), Philipp Freise and I reflected on why crises are often the best catalyst for innovation and transformation. Here’s why I remain optimistic: 1️⃣ Stagnating Productivity: Yes, it’s a challenge. But it’s also an opportunity. Innovative businesses that invest in automation and AI today will define the future. 2️⃣ Declining Workforce: With fewer people entering labor markets, upskilling and reskilling become essential. Equipping employees with new skills is no longer optional—it’s mission-critical. The truth is, innovation and transformation rarely thrive in good times. They’re born in moments like this. This year, we’ve learned that diversity isn’t just about who’s in the room—it’s about the collective strength that emerges when every voice is heard, especially in tough times. It allows us to see possibilities we might have missed if everyone thought, acted, or approached problems the same way. Innovation often blooms in adversity, but it thrives when different minds come together. As we approach the final days of this year, let’s reflect on the setbacks we’ve faced—not as failures, but as lessons that pushed us to think differently and act boldly. As 2024 draws to a close, I’ve found myself reflecting on what has been a year of unexpected twists and turns and personal discovery. It’s fair to say this year didn’t unfold quite the way I imagined it would—but it’s in those moments that you truly learn who your real friends and supporters are. One thing I’m especially proud of is seeing the government begin to acknowledge some of my work and ideas—work that I championed while leading housing in local government, both regionally and nationally. It's a reminder that meaningful contributions can continue to resonate long after you’ve moved on. Since stepping away from politics, I’ve had the privilege of embarking on some incredible new ventures. This summer, I launched the Inclusive Growth Consultancy, which as already allowed me to collaborate with a number of public and private sector partners to help build sustainable, thriving communities. I became a Fellow at The Housing and Finance Institute, work with Nick and the Cratus team as a Senior Associate, joined and contributed to think-tanks and panel discussions, and launched the Inclusive Growth Partnership. And on a personal note, I’m grateful to Julian Richer for encouraging me to write and share my inclusive growth story—a project I’m excited to say I’m developing further. For me, 2024 has been a year of growth, gratitude, and discovery. To everyone who has been part of this journey—thank you.
