We want to thank Pilsonības un migrācijas lietu pārvalde / OCMA (The Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs) for their involvement and commitment to finding solutions to improve the residence permit process for international students. Through this collaboration with the #SDSI students, we're hopeful that December 2024 will bring positive changes in this matter. Similarly, we thank the European Movement Latvia and share the same hopes for Youth engagement. 🌍 As Estonia’s number one think tank in integration and migration research, IBS continues to contribute actively to critical national discussions. At the recent Integration Conference, organized by our long-term partner, the Integration Foundation/ Integratsiooni Sihtasutus, our team once again joined in the dialogues. Under the leadership of Kristjan Kaldur, IBS is conducting a study commissioned by Integratsiooni Sihtasutus, focusing on the challenges faced by stateless residents in Estonia when applying for citizenship. 🧐📑 This topic, crucial in Estonia, was at the forefront of the parliamentary party debate, where former Education Minister Tõnis Lukas highlighted that the state’s goal is not to "turn Estonian Russians into Estonians" but to bring them into a shared information space. 🤝 Another key issue discussed was the transition to Estonian-language education, a subject IBS has explored in-depth. Our research covers the transition in Tartu schools and adult Estonian language learning in non-Estonian-speaking environments. (Links to our studies in the comments ⬇️). The parliamentary debate featured representatives from Estonia’s leading political parties: 📍 Tõnis Lukas (Isamaa) 📍 Juku-Kalle Raid (Eesti 200) 📍 Vadim Belobrovtsev (Centre Party) 📍 Mart Kallas (EKRE) 📍 Maria Jufereva-Skuratovski (Reform Party) 📍 Raimond Kaljulaid (Social Democratic Party) 📸 Photo by Olavi Ruhno #Integration #MigrationResearch #LanguageLearning #IBS #Estonia #PolicyInnovation

To achieve sustainable development and fulfill the aspirations of #Agenda2063 and with it the African vision of the "Africa We Want", it is essential to empower and invest in our greatest resource - the youth. With young people making up the majority of Africa's population, their innovative potential, creativity, and leadership are crucial to driving the continent forward. As a proud Pan Africanist and Afro Optimist I strongly believe that our youth are indeed the answer to the Africa We Want, but they need support and thus here are a few key strategies that African nations can adopt to provide more opportunities for youth and ensure they are well-positioned in today's digital age: Digital Skills Development: Partner with technology companies and educational institutions to offer coding, data analytics, and AI courses. Digital literacy must start early to prepare youth for future job markets and foster innovation. Supporting Youth Entrepreneurship: Create accessible financing options, such as grants and micro-loans, to help young entrepreneurs launch tech-based ventures. Incubators and accelerator programs should be expanded to support startups tackling Africa’s unique challenges. Strengthening STEM Education: Revamp curricula to include STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) from primary to higher education, ensuring youth acquire skills relevant to the future of work. Investment in Digital Infrastructure: Improve internet connectivity and expand digital access in rural and underserved areas. Affordable internet is key to bridging the digital divide and creating equal opportunities. Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs): Encourage collaborations between governments and private entities to develop programs for job placements, mentorship, and internships in digital fields. Policy Frameworks for Digital Transformation: Governments should implement policies that encourage digital innovation and data privacy, which will attract investments and protect young digital entrepreneurs. Inclusive Platforms for Youth Voices: Empower young people to participate in governance by integrating their voices into decision-making processes, ensuring policies reflect their needs and aspirations. Focus on Green and Digital Jobs: Encourage youth engagement in digital solutions for climate action, from energy-efficient technologies to digital platforms that address sustainability challenges. Let us celebrate and uplift Africa's youth as they drive our continent toward a prosperous and technologically advanced future. Happy Africa Youth Day!!! Ideas, Ideas, Ideas. Arguably the real transformative power of #diaspora comes in their ideas borne from their hybrid living. What is fascinating about #diasporaengagement is that diasporas often have a little light continously shining on home where they ask themselves the following when they come across innovation and creativity: Wouldn't this be great back home? As Picasso once quipped, good artists copy, great artists steal! That is why it is interesting to see #Uganda pick the brains of their diaspora in Kenya to help upgrade their education policy and system. In a world where we are seeing what seems to be an ever increasing turn to nativism, isolationism, and other forces of exclusion, we need creative counter movements to challenge those turns and to pinpoint their shortcomings. Here's one to consider. Every country needs ideas to remain competitive. And here's the simple reality of the economy of ideas.....there are more clever ideas out in the world than there are within your borders. Another signal of why diaspora #diplomacy may very well be the future of diaspora engagement, not just for national development in key sectors like education, but for international relations and applications for global wellbeing. Onwards. https://lnkd.in/ejG8cvHk

The African Union stated that, through knowledge, competencies, skills, innovation, and creativity, it is #education that will be essential to nurturing African core values and promote sustainable #development. How can we make it possible? By creating "the conditions that make it possible to access #education anytime and anywhere, fostering critical thinking and self-awareness, promoting the creation of open, inclusive communities" - as Giampaolo Silvestri, AVSI Secretary General, highlighted today at Global Partnership for Education event. Celebrating Africa Day 2024 with @cmssouthafrica 1. With the African Union 2024 theme for Africa Day in mind, what role does @cmssouthafrica play towards building Africans fit for the 21st Century within the legal profession? An African legal professional fit for the 21st Century recognises the importance of innovation, resilience, and cultural awareness as key principles required to play a meaningful role in the global market. At CMS we strive to develop our professionals in their specialised fields of practice to exude these principles as a way of practicing law. This is done by opening the doors which provide access to global markets and clients, facilitating discussions regarding key trends in law and ensuring that our services reflect the needs of the corporate society in which we operate. 2. How can African nations adapt their education systems to ensure lifelong learning opportunities that cater to the evolving needs of individuals in the 21st century workforce? African nations need to be bold and unapologetic about adapting the current education systems with the African child at heart. The curriculum must mirror the societies that we live in and the great empires from which we are born. The vision of building a workforce which is empowered, authentic and dynamic starts with how we educate our children. African nations must recognise the limitless opportunities which exist in Africa and become fanatic about developing our countries for the greater good of Africans. 3. What constitutes “relevant learning in Africa”? Relevant learning in Africa to me is a call to ensure our educational systems in Africa cater to our specific circumstances and aspirations. Our diverse local cultures, languages and experiences must be included in educational materials. To know where we are going, we must remember where we come from. Africa’s history has for too long been distorted, vandalised and taught to us from outside perspectives. Indigenous knowledge systems and practices need to be integrated into our curriculums right from early childhood development centres to higher education institutions. As family members and members of society we are responsible for ensuring that we do our part by providing access to books by Africa authors, supporting and developing skills to address local challenges as well as providing education that is accessible to all. #cms #cmslaw #africaday #africaday2024 #africa #legalprofession #relevantlearning #youngafricantalent #transformtheordinary
