I am spending two weeks at the EIEF - Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance in Rome for an academic exchange and to better understand the role of evidence-based policy advice in Italy. A big thank you to my hosts! The atmosphere here is truly stimulating 😊 . 🔸 The Banca d'Italia-funded EIEF may be small, but it has an impressive faculty that would be the envy of many German universities. Also apart from that Italy has a lot to offer in the field of economics. Università Bocconi in Milan is one of the leading economic research institutions in Europe and is ranked 32nd in the Shanghai Ranking for economics, while the University of Bonn, the best German university, is ranked 39th. Like Germany, Italy can also boast a #Nobel Prize winner in economics: Franco Modigliani from Rome received the prize for his work on life cycle theory and corporate finance. 🔹 However, the overall university landscape paints a sober picture. In the Shanghai Ranking, the leading Italian university is Sapienza Università di Roma, in places 100-150. By comparison, the leading German university is LMU Munich in 43rd place. The relatively poor performance of Italian universities may also be due to the fact that the salaries of academics in Italy are almost 30% lower than in Germany. 🔸 The differences in the academic landscape are reflected in the total expenditure on research and development. In Italy, this amounts to 1.5% of gross domestic product, compared to 3.1% in Germany. This is one of the reasons why productivity in Italy has barely increased in the last two decades. 🔹 However, this does not stop Italians from conducting cutting-edge research, just often not in Italy. In 2022 and 2023, 43 of the European Research Council's highly prestigious Advanced Grants went to researchers from Italy, 86 to German, 63 to French and 47 to British researchers. However, only 26 award winners work in Italy, while 87 work at institutions in Germany, 77 in the UK and 69 in France. Many top Italian researchers work abroad. We at ZEW – Leibniz-Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung also benefit from this - Italians are the strongest nationality among our international researchers. 🔸 There is scientific potential in Italy, but it is evidently not being sufficiently utilised. Science needs patience and perseverance, which not every government can muster. Perhaps the fact that governments in Italy only stay in power for just over a year on average has an impact here: since 1946, there have been 68 governments under 31 prime ministers.

The third edition of the Summer Module on Economics and Institutions in Europe just came to an end: what a great opportunity to come back to Trento, but most importantly to meet and discuss with extraordinary lecturers and PhD participants. The Summer School was centered around the study of the diversity of Europe’s societies, trying to answer to the following set of questions: If formal and informal institutions need to be compatible with each other, how can we organize effective multi-level governance? Who is to make decisions at what level? At what degree of specificity? How do we even detect frictions and incompatibilities? How do we deal with them once we find them? In brief: how can local traditions and values be incorporated without compromising the overarching goals of the EU? In trying to answer these questions, we attended many lectures to understand theoretical and methodological topics that are at the frontier of current knowledge, including institutional complementarities, the measurement of culture, as well as different experimental techniques to elicit social norms. Thank you to the Trento Jean Monnet Centre and to the Department of Economics and Management at the Università di Trento for organizing this event. I am looking forward to delving deeper into these fascinating subjects and applying what I have learned to my future research!

NEWS | The Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Hohenheim (Fakultät Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften | Universität Hohenheim) is starting the new year by giving itself a present: the final report for AACSB International accreditation has been submitted! “We believe that our business, economics and social sciences are in an excellent position – and we want to prove this with the accreditation! We are ready for the top international league,” says Dean Prof. Dr. Jörg Schiller and his team. We will definitely keep our fingers crossed for the final visit of the peer review team at the end of May 2025! About AACSB accreditation AACSB accreditation represents an international quality standard in the field of Business Administration and Economics. Worldwide, only 6% of all business schools have qualified for this seal of quality. The accreditation is a clear indicator of quality and excellence, increases the competitiveness of the faculty and offers many opportunities for English-language courses, exchange programs or double degrees with top-class partner universities around the world. Business, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Hohenheim The great strength of the University of Hohenheim is its interdisciplinary approach. In addition to the core subjects in economics, there are also strong social sciences, sociology, psychology, law, etc. In addition, Information Systems and Communication Science complement the spectrum. The wide range of flexible options allows students to set their own individual specializations during their studies. For example, topics such as #sustainability, #digital transformation or #inequality and #diversity. Henner Gimpel Michael P. Evers Michael Feketitsch Agatha Maisch Sabrina Buchsteiner

On rankings and measures of achievement: Our society grades, ranks and lists the best, the ones at the top. It creates a sense of interest, proud, challenge, and desirability to belong to any top group. However, context, complexities and the very contingencies of life are so relevant; that a minor change on any of those, can immediately void any comparison. The brilliant student who had a family issue, the brilliant professional who unexpectedly got sick or into an accident, the achiever who realized that wanted a huge swift change in life or career trajectory. That’s probably why many motivational mentors and career experts reflect and advice saying that the only valid measure of comparison is with yourself. If you’re proud of the human being and professional that you are, you might be in the right trajectory. If you strive to reach new goals and alignment in your life, you might be in the right trajectory. If you feel fulfillment and personal movement, learnings and new excitement, you might be in the right trajectory. Rankings and ratings attempt to measure quality. But when the quality being measured is about human beings, there is not such a complex and encompassing system that can accurately observe each one’s process, considering context, contingencies and complexities. It all boils down to observe your inputs, and develop habits and processes that make sense for you and your very own trajectory. If you pay enough attention to yourself (which I testify is often times very difficult) you’ll act and walk on a personal quality path. Be kind to yourself but make sure you have some direction.
