IMUs, AHRSs and INSs don’t always differ physically; rather, the differences between these sensors comes down to the level of data processing performed. An IMU provides raw motion data. An AHRS can process this data and provide directional information, i.e. heading and orientation. Finally, an INS can take in inputs from external sensors such as a DVL, and process all data using a Kalman filter. This enables “true” positioning, i.e. placing an object in 3D space and tracking its position as it moves through that space.
