Whale Guardians™ seeks to set an example for a relationship between the maritime industry and ocean conservation. The global unintended vessel strike epidemic is a very simple and solvable problem. By resolving this issue, it sets in motion a cascade of further collaboration and progress in the protection of our oceans and the diverse and wonderful marine life within. We owe it to the countless species, such as the critically endangered great whales, who have been around so much longer than humans. But even selfishly, we owe it to ourselves. We should be allowed to bear witness to beautiful clean oceans full of all sorts of brilliant and ancient creatures. 𝐃𝐈𝐃 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓: The Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus), inhabits tropical and subtropical waters of the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic Ocean. Spiny lobsters get their name from the forward-pointing spines that cover their bodies to help protect them from predators. As with many other marine species in Belize waters, the Caribbean spiny lobsters are vulnerable (IUCN Status) due to degradation of coral reefs, underwater marine debris, climate change, and ocean acidification, which can weaken the shells of their prey. The conservation of the Caribbean spiny lobster remains a priority for Belize. WCS Belize reminds you about the upcoming close season period March 1st to June 30th (each year). This four-month period serves as a crucial window for the lobsters to breed and reproduce, fostering the long-term sustainability of the species and ensuring healthy populations for future generations. Did you know that when hurricanes strike marine animals react in many different ways? 🦈 Sharks sense the storm and swim to deeper waters for safety, while sea turtles face greater risks as their nesting grounds are often washed away, endangering eggs and hatchlings. 🐢 Dolphins and whales are usually able to escape, but the storm’s noise can disrupt their communication. 🐬 Unfortunately, fish like Groupers may suffer from barotrauma due to pressure changes, leaving them stranded on shorelines. Coral reefs, which are an essential part of marine ecosystems, can shatter under the storm's force, causing long-term damage. Seabirds may be blown off course or lose their coastal habitats, while hurricanes also sweep marine debris into the ocean, creating dangers like entanglement or plastic ingestion for marine life. 🌀 Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the recent hurricanes in the US. 💙 You can help protect marine life by supporting Sea Shepherd's conservation efforts around the world. Only one thing makes less sense than bottom trawling - doing it in marine protected areas (MPAs). I signed this petition. Will you? Unfortunately, this highly controversial and destructive fishing technique has some supporters. The European Commission believes that "79% of the coastal seabed is considered to be physically disturbed, mainly caused by bottom trawling". In the EU Action Plan on “Protecting and restoring marine ecosystems for sustainable and resilient fisheries”, the Commission suggests action. So what is the Commission planning to do? Make bottom trawling prohibited in all European waters? No. They planned to prohibit it in MPAs that are Natura 2000 sites designated under the Habitats Directive to protect the seabed and marine species. Disastrous fishing, including bottom trawling, affects 86% of MPAs, so it should shock no one that the Commission wanted to act. Unfortunately, member states are often not on board. Hence, this petition calls on EU leaders to protect their protected areas and the marine life that relies on them. But before you sign the petition, one reason to be cheerful - just yesterday (16.4.) Greece announced it will become the first European country to ban bottom trawling in all of its national marine parks and protected areas. It makes sense to ask representatives to do more to protect European waters and biodiversity.
