Let’s talk about a growing and dangerous threat that’s targeting not-for-profit organisations: social engineering attacks. Social engineering is when hackers manipulate people into revealing sensitive information or taking actions that compromise their organisation’s security. These attacks don’t rely on technical hacking—rather, they exploit human psychology. NFPs, often built on trust and collaboration, are especially vulnerable. 🛑Common Social Engineering Techniques🛑 Hackers are masters of creating pressure and urgency. They often: - Pretend to be trusted individuals like CEOs, IT support, or even donors. They might send an urgent email or call, requesting sensitive data or access. - Exploit emotions—they use empathy or urgency to push staff into acting without thinking. For instance, “This donation won’t go through without this info!” or “We need immediate access to the donor database for this emergency!” It’s not always obvious—it could be as simple as clicking on a link in an email or downloading an attachment. How Can Cities Keep Nonprofit Groups Cyber Secure? “One of the big things about this study in particular is it represents a big narrative shift in the role cities play in cybersecurity,” Powazek said. “Cities are often thought of as ransomware victims.
