241217 – I was at the airport earlier this week, to receive a family from overseas. Quite clearly, it is that time of the year, when family reunions take place. “Great to see you again,” “Welcome back,” or just a smile, and a warm hug. The many ways, that we get together with loved ones.
Coincidentally, over the weekend, I caught a movie, about a family, trying to have a reunion dinner, though they had many differences. And one very important truth, that the grandma of the household, said at the dining table, though there were some missing members of the family. “Family gathering is a time to catch-up and rejoice. It is to celebrate what we have, rather than sigh over what is missing.”
Such a simple and important truth, whether about reunions, or whatever that we do. So often, we focus on what is missing, even if it is only a small fraction. One person missing from the reunion meal, we talked about the person. Why not celebrate all the others that are present, and catch up with all of them?
There is a story, about a wall, built with 100 bricks. Whenever anyone walks pass the wall, the usual remark is, “There are two bricks laid wrongly in the middle of the wall.” The issue is, few noticed, the 98 bricks that are perfectly placed. Again, the question is, why not notice the 98 bricks, rather than the two misplaced ones?
As our year draws to a close, and we reflect on the past 12 months, what do we remember? Do we focus on the have’s or the have not’s? What are we thankful for? Or are we lamenting about what we did not get?
Let us celebrate what we have, and be thankful for them. It is a time to remember, and honour, all that we have achieved. Yes, we can consider, what are the plans for the new year. But for now, let us enjoy the ending, of another great year.
