Increasingly, since the pandemic, our Primary Academies have seen that more of our families are struggling. Too often, we see children coming to school in damaged shoes, in clothes that are too small; we see children, and families, going hungry; we hear from children that they don’t have any toys or books at home. We believe it is our duty to do what we can to change this. This is why we are opening Community Hubs: so that families in need can come to collect essential items. Our supporters have been instrumental in making these Community Hubs happen, pledging financial support and donations of items. Could you, or your company, help? Someone asked me for my thoughts on organizations to donate to if you want to help Western North Carolina. Based on information from those I know in the area, here are some that are on site and seem to be making a big impact. The situation is rapidly changing and wildly different depending on where you are at. Given the devastation and all the work that is needed to repair or fully replace infrastructure (roads, electric lines, water lines), the government seems to have their hands full with that. In many cases it is individuals, local businesses, nonprofits, and churches that are really carrying the load in terms of meeting immediate individual needs. On May 7, 1986, President Ronald Reagan issued proclamation 5472, recognizing the day as National #BarrierAwarenessDay, and calling upon Americans to create events and programs that would contribute to removing obstacles for people with disabilities. Today, we're reminded to continue to work to eliminate social, legal, economic, and physical barriers that confront individuals with disabilities. Not only do we try to eliminate physical barriers everyday through our #accessibility solutions, with our non-profit AmrampCARES we also hope to help more people with financial barriers that may keep them from gaining the access they need, even to their own homes.
