Delighted to be part of this great article by Elaine Maguire O'Connor in THE GLOSS MAGAZINE about the upcoming retinol regulations. These new EU regulations will be rolled out over 36 months starting at the end of 2024, and state that there will be a 0.3% retinol limit for skincare and face products and a 0.05% limit for bodycare going forward. This new move does not make sense to me or to many of my dermatology colleagues. The new rules are designed to address concerns over high levels of vitamin A exposure. The amount of vitamin A absorbed through the skin from topical products is negligible, particularly as we typically only use retinoids on the face and neck area, and serious adverse reactions are extremely rare. In my humble opinion these regulations make no sense and are poorly substantiated. We can freely buy oral Vitamin A supplements in health food shops and pharmacies where we see an absolute increase in vitamin A levels in the blood... no one seems to be commenting on this! For those concerned about their favourite skincare products, worry not! Our beloved @SkinBetter Science AlphaRet Overnight Cream remains unaffected by these new regulations. Remember, when using retinol, start with a low concentration and gradually increase to avoid 'retinol irritancy.’ And always apply sunscreen - this remains the most important step in your daily anti-aging skincare regimen.
