The Nordberg radial engine was a revolutionary development in the domain of power generation. Its unique configuration offered numerous advantages over traditional inline engines. By positioning the cylinders horizontally, the Nordberg radial engine allowed the output shaft to be placed in a vertical position, rendering it suitable for pumping applications. Moreover, the radial engine's compact design and lighter weight made it a feasible choice for installations where space and weight were crucial factors. Initially introduced as spark-ignition natural gas burning units, the Nordberg radial engines quickly established themselves as reliable and cost-effective. These engines featured two spark plugs located in the cylinder head, and a single cam on the crankshaft actuated a gas valve for each cylinder. This gas valve allowed the natural gas to enter the incoming scavenging air for the cylinder. As its use extended to central power stations and various pumping applications, Nordberg continued to develop the radial engine, introducing diesel and Duafuel versions. The Duafuel engine was a notable innovation that could operate on both diesel and natural gas, providing greater fuel consumption flexibility. This feature allowed the engine to operate with the most economical fuel mixture possible. In the diesel and Duafuel engines, the single cam now actuated a fuel pump for each cylinder, and the diesel fuel injector was in the center of the cylinder head. Overall, the Nordberg radial engine represented a significant breakthrough in the realm of power generation and pump applications across different industries. Its advancements and unique features have made it a popular choice among various applications, and its continued development will undoubtedly provide further improvements in the future. Replacing Seven Vane Impellers With Eight Vane Impellers Leads To Electric Motor Overload In Nine-Stage Pipeline Pump. Thanks Robert Perez & Dewane Fambrough for sharing. Abstract This case study deals with a west Texas pipeline transfer pump with the following design specifications: Byron Jackson 3x6x9E DVMX; BEP at 650 gpm, 3560 rpm, Ns=1220; Originally 9 stages, 2 impellers were removed, utilizing remaining 7 stages; Directly coupled to a 450 HP electric motor drive. After de-bottlenecking the pipeline to obtain more flow, the motor driver for this pump began overloading at the new, higher flowrates. Horse power calculations suggested that the electric motor driver should have been adequate for the new hydraulic conditions. However, we began to suspect there was an internal pump design problem once it was found that the field performance diata did not match the original test data. We discovered that the pump was producing 20% more head than expected at the end-of-curve conditions (900 gpm). Upon disassembly, we found that 8 of the 9 impellers have 8 vanes instead of the expected 7 vanes. (The pump OEM provides both 7 and 8 vane impeller designs.) the OEM’s 4x6x9D 8 vane design produces more head past the best efficiency point than the corresponding 7 vane design and does not continuously rise to shutoff. To counteract the additional head producing capability of the 8 vane impellers, we decided to remove 2 stages. After de-staging, the motor overload condition was resolved. It is assumed that someone replaced the original 7 vane impellers with 8 vane impellers to obtain more head and hence more flow with the same pump. This case study clearly illustrates the danger of changing impeller designs without a thorough hydraulic analysis. #Pumps #BEP #SpecificSpeed #Rotating #Equipment #Motors

VSD Braking Systems (Brake Units and Aluminium Housed Resistors) Dynamic Braking Systems are used to dissipate energy (cheap and simple method) by converting regenerative energy into thermal energy (burn off energy). Smaller Drives include a built-in switch to divert extra power to a resistor, but for larger units without a built-in braking switch, external braking units are required. These systems can release the energy regenerated during Motor speed regulation (via brake resistance) to produce enough braking torque to ensure normal operation. These systems are popular for use in cable/wire drawing machines, cranes, elevators, production machinery, mine hoists, centrifugal and oil pumps in oil field, etc. Generally used for industrial applications where quick stopping is required which could cause the DC bus voltage to rise (over voltage).
