The Right Game Plan: In this episode of The Last Mile Radio, representatives from SCBC member Bank of America and the Los Angeles Rams discuss their joint fellowship program, designed to create career pathways for formerly incarcerated individuals in the professional sports industry. The conversation underscores the importance of transitional support and educational opportunities for second chance talent. It also features insights from a program participant whose success story showcases the transformative impact of corporate commitment to advance second chances. A key factor in the program’s success relates to how BofA is reshaping the narrative around second chance hiring, including by: 1. Partnering with think tanks to ground discussions in facts; 2. Working with filmmakers to share real-life stories and amplify second chance voices; and 3. Joining the SCBC to learn and share best practices across industries. It was so good to reconnect to my former colleague from Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation Mark Genua of Jobs for the Future (JFF) today! I learned about his work and expertise in the modern apprenticeship movement, how apprenticeships can be a powerful tool for talent development, and I want to learn more. Also: Mark taught me the term "occupational segregation" which helps to describe what I see as the central problem that talent development should solve: when a company or organization gets less and less diverse the higher you go in leadership level. 💡

Recently, Paul Fain highlighted the need of youth apprenticeship programs in our workforce in his newsletter “The Job.” He instantly noted that employers need to take a more active role in the U.S. education system to establish career pathways for a broader range of Americans, especially those without four-year degrees. Despite bipartisan support and the pressing demands of the labor market, progress in this area has been slow at best. Noting two Brookings Institute reports (read them here and here), he commented that the best approach to solving this need is through regional, multi-sector coalitions, a goal CareerWise and our partners have been working toward for years. He quotes Annelies Goger, a The Brookings Institution fellow and co-author of the report: “The changes that we propose involve a transformative shift in how employers in the U.S. have seen themselves, from being a consumer of talent to being a co-producer of talent… Eventually, more employers will come to the conclusion that they have to play a more active role in creating the prepared workforce they need.” You can read the entire newsletter where he explores “A Unified Voice on Workforce Needs” here. https://lnkd.in/g_wEEgqn
