After three decades in hospitality, my coaching practice has become my new kitchen – where I help professionals develop their own unique recipe for success. And what a year it's been! Yesterday morning I participated in the Olympic rowing event on my Concept2, Inc. I buckled in and competed in three heats. I was pulling with all my might in the 2000-meter solo event. Ever had a personal trainer🏋️or a nutritionist? 🥕 They most likely used an autocratic coaching style. “Here’s a regimen, and I’ll work with you on your adherence to that regimen.” The autocratic coaching style is particularly useful for team members who need framework and guidance. Often inexperience or lacking confidence. What are some of the benefits of this approach? ➡️ Structure for their work.  ➡️ Learning the process and where they are.  ➡️ Gain confidence as they make progress. This technique was used very effectively on me when I went rappelling down a mountain on a family vacation. I thought knowing my children had already rappelled and were at the bottom of the mountain would be enough to overcome my fear of heights. I was wrong. Instead, I was frozen 🥶 at the edge of the cliff, my knees buckling. Nothing the guide did or said could get me down the cliff. Until he broke everything down into the smallest possible microsteps. The fear of the outcome was what kept me from moving. Be the guide your team needs. Provide them the steps they need to succeed. Have you ever stopped to ask "What if??.." 🤔 It's both interesting & valuable. It helps #leadersinsport kick in some second-order thinking. To help you I post a series of questions every Wednesday. It's called "What if??..🤔 Wednesday" Check out this weeks two questions to ponder ⬇ - What if you turn the mirror inward? Before looking at how you lead others, ask how do you rate at leading yourself? Perhaps start with a look at how you rate your alignment with your #values & purpose? Then areas like your personal standards, your #learning, your development. - What if the next time you are swapping ‘war stories’ that instead of focusing on tales of success you instead swap and share incidents of failure or rejection? What if you normalised failure? When people embrace moments of defeat and misfiring they see it as just another step toward success and as a learning opportunity. Can you think of any downsides to readily accepting moments of failure so that people don’t limit their possibilities for success? I've learned a lot about execution in business from coaching athletes at an elite level. Sometimes you need to recognize that things aren't going as you want and deal with them head-on. Identify your mistakes, uncover your bad habits, acknowledge, and then make changes. And sometimes it takes hearing from others to figure it out... Here is a clip from one of my coaching sessions a few years back. My goalie was playing in the TBL organization at the time, and would get called up for his NHL debut later that season... Here's the thing, we spotted a vulnerability, so we stopped. Sometimes you just need to stop and talk, figure it out. My goalie got feedback from two different angles, and two different perspectives on motivation. (1) he heard from me, who was observing from the side view, and from the perspective of wanting him to make the save. (2) he heard from the shooter who was viewing from the front while taking the shot, and from the perspective of a shooter who wanted to score. Those two inputs were invaluable when heard in conjunction with each other. So gather all the info, take it all into account, hear from multiple people, then make the most informed decision on how to move forward.
