🔒In the world of Governance, Risk, and Compliance (#GRC), mutually understanding diverse regulatory frameworks is an absolute necessity. As I recently had a conversation with an organization that operates in the higher education sector, I have come to appreciate the importance of effective control mapping. I’d like to share some insights regarding an often-complex task – Control Mapping 📚 Control mapping essentially acts as a translator between different languages of compliance. Both the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) have their own unique sets of requirements, terminology, and structure - much like two distinct dialects. 🗣️ Integration becomes a delicate balancing act; maintaining PCI DSS compliance whilst ensuring the protection of student educational information under FERPA. The secret lies in breaking down these frameworks into their core control objectives. 🎯 Mapping these controls necessitates a deep understanding of each factor involved. For instance, PCI DSS entails categories like cardholder data protection and system monitoring, whereas FERPA revolves around directory information access and educational record protection. The crosswalk revolves around common principles– securing data, maintaining privacy, and regular auditing, to name a few. Identifying these core principles and their counterpart controls in each framework alleviates the complexity. 💡 By understanding and implementing an effective control mapping strategy, organizations can ensure a more streamlined compliance approach while reducing risk and ensuring vital protections are covering all bases. Through my experiences, I firmly believe that having a solid understanding of control mapping is a vital skill for any GRC professional tasked with juggling multiple compliance frameworks.💼 Have any thoughts or experiences to share on this topic? My #HumanCapital #ProductivityGains (HCPG) grew by 116% from 2022 to 2023 after three years of stagnancy from 2019 to 2021. The last time it had grown was in 2019 when it grew by 44.6% after a 5 years stagnancy, 2014 to 2018. What happened 2022 to 2023? I had evolved from a low-skilled internal control and compliance officer to a GRC Specialist in 2022, Cybersecurity Analyst in 2022, and a Chartered Accountant in 2023. 2024 has been a great year too - I have evolved into other things. 😊 HCPG growth is at 51% 🤓 and it's awesome putting in the work and seeing your progress happen seamlessly in time. #LessonsLearnt: Do what works for you, but always remain on a journey of self discovery with incremental definitions of done. (Flexed my Agile parlance there. 🤓) So just do you, and keep improving you. 🌟 Proud to Share My Dissertation on Cybersecurity in the UK Banking Sector! 🌟 As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, safeguarding sensitive financial data is a top priority. My research delved deep into the cybersecurity challenges faced by the UK banking industry and proposed actionable strategies to enhance resilience. 🔍 Key Highlights of My Work: Analysing Threats: I explored critical risks like phishing attacks, ransomware, insider threats, and advanced persistent threats (APTs) that jeopardize financial systems. Evaluating Existing Measures: My findings showed that while banks comply with regulations like GDPR and FCA guidelines, gaps in consistency and technology integration remain. Leveraging Emerging Technologies: I examined the transformative role of AI and blockchain in fraud detection, secure transactions, and real-time monitoring. The Role of Organizational Culture: A security-aware culture significantly reduces breaches. Training and awareness programs are essential for building strong cyber defences. Day three HTSFVI Mentorship program 7.0 by Hilton Top Solicitors We had two speakers and our first speaker was Onyinyechi Nwachuku and she spoke on Cyber security Data, Frameworks and Guidelines. Cyber security is the practice of protecting systems, networks and programs from digital attacks. These cyber attacks are usually aimed at accessing, changing or destroying sensitive information from users. We have Personal Identifiable Information (PII) like names and phone numbers and Sensitive Personal Identifiable Information (SPII) like health records and BVN which are private informations that should be safeguarded. There are local and international bodies that regulate cyber security. Locally we have The Federal Trade Commission Act(FTCA), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act among others. Internationally we have GDPR and HIPAA. Our speaker went on to talk about Frameworks and issuing bodies. Frameworks are voluntary sets of documents describing guidelines, standards that help organizations reduce, combat and safeguard their systems from cyber attacks. National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST) and International Organization for Standardization(ISO). These bodies issue framework guidelines. Framework is voluntary but when organizations make it necessary it becomes enforceable eg PCIDSS for all banks and other financial institutions. Compliance is implementing the provisions of the regulations, standard framework and guidelines. Compliance does not exactly guarantee security but organizations are to do whatever it takes to stay secured. Noncompliance and breach attracts fines of different degrees. She also spoke on the CIA triad Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability. Confidentiality has to do with data privacy. while Integrity: no form of alteration and Availability: access to users. Lastly she spoke on Governance Risk and Compliance(GRC) and the various career paths for lawyers, they include analyst, Logistics Management and Compliance. Mrs Onyinyechi N. was exceptional as she gave practical examples and illustrations to everything she spoke on. I want to specially thank Deborah Enyone Oni (LLB. BL. LLM.
