Story time: “Apply anyways, what’s the worst that can happen?” That was my mentality 2 years ago when I was encouraged to apply for a Security Engineering role at Amazon. I didn’t think I was qualified. Oh well, what’s the worst that can happen? I got scheduled for a phone screen. I panicked, I studied, I researched Amazon culture, I dusted off my grad school books, I crammmed. I’ll do my best, what’s the worst that can happen? I moved onto the loop. I saw this as a great opportunity to see what “Big Tech Loops” were like, peek behind the curtain. I did portswigger labs and hack the box. I obsessively threat modeled everything around me. I practiced, I made piles of notes. I told my friends and family I probably won’t get the job but might as well try. Seriously, what’s the worst that can happen? Then I got an offer! I was looking at it the wrong way. I should’ve been saying “what’s the BEST that can happen?” One outcome: I get the job Alternative outcome: I have improved appsec knowledge/skills from my weeks of prep. I have detailed notes on my career to enhance my resume. I have identified areas for growth or professional development. I expanded my professional network. Turns out the “worst” that can happen is pretty darn useful. So apply anyways because…. What are the best things that can happen if you do?
