Yesterday was International Women in Cyber day! As it fell on a Sunday, it fell quietly :-)
I have worked in the sector for er em…quite some time… While I completed my degree in Information Systems in Trinity College in 1995, I had been working in tech since 1988/89 when I did a post grad internship with IBM. I did all things tech there - systems admin, programming, project management, business resilience, disaster recovery, operations. It provided me with such a great foundation for what followed - as my cybersecurity career only began in 1997 when I joined ICS Building Society as their first cybersecurity administrator.
Since then the sector has grown significantly - extending to include Privacy and AI Governance domains. During this time I’ve seen the number of women entering the cyber industry grow significantly. While the industry encourages and adapts accordingly - more equality is required for sure but it’s moving forward. Working in the privacy sector has opened my eyes to what that equality actually looks like, as the privacy sector is really well represented by some very senior thought leading women. Women who are founders, managing directors, CEOs, members of the c-suite, directors, partners, leading authorities etc.
Groups like Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) and Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) UK & Ireland are moving this agenda forward proactively. If you want to see these changes in the industry continue at pace, become an ally, a mentor, a supporter etc.
Big shout out to all the men and women who provide support, mentorship and advocacy for women in the sector!
