I read a lot of commentary on technology in education: The potential & pitfalls of AI; The banning of devices. But are students learning how to think critically about technology in society? It is arguably the most important subject kids need to learn as they become active members of society. Lest we collectively remain blind to the social costs of existing digital tech applications: consumption, distraction, polarisation, etc Continuing to allow market forces to set the agenda, even against public interest . Bold new approaches are needed for preparing students for a technology-enabled future. This is what we are now working on in Hong Kong, for K-12 students, in preparation for our annual experiential leadership programme. In 2022 the HKSAR Government released the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology (I&T) Development Blueprint with the vision to establish Hong Kong as an international I&T hub. https://lnkd.in/gW23f_jE A key objective is to cultivate the local talent needed to realise the ambition – in addition to attracting talents from around the world. But how to best prepare these future tech talents - and professionals in all fields? To leverage China’s industry strengths and Hong Kong’s access to capital and international super-connector status. It requires expansive international mindsets. The future workforce, to say nothing of future tech leadership, must be able to think critically, not simply follow trends from Silicon Valley. If we believe technology is a problem-solving tool, what problems does Hong Kong need to solve? Who will teach the next generation? We examined this in 2021 in our report Redefining ‘Smart City’ for Resilience in the New Normal. https://lnkd.in/gGa58TxT What public goods can be enabled by technology and need to be prioritised? How to put money to work in developing the technology applications that will benefit all of society, not only tech owners? These are questions that go beyond simplistic notions of how to scale an app and monetise attention. Cultivating a broader view on technology should start early. Teachers at all levels need new training, new skills and a practical understanding of current and future technologies. It all needs funding. 🌟 I recently visited EDUTECH ASIA 2024 in Singapore, driven by my curiosity about the latest innovations in education tech. As someone who teaches remotely, I'm always on the hunt for tools and solutions that can elevate learning far beyond the classroom. My goal? To find tech that truly supports real-life, project-based learning. In the Social Entrepreneurship MA program at Tallinn University, where I teach, our students don’t just attend classes—they build their own businesses from day one. Traditional classroom teaching takes a back seat to hands-on experience, with real-world action as the primary learning metric. 💪 Spin-offs, skills gained, and networks built—that’s what truly measures our success. Unfortunately, our current academic tracking still revolves around credits, essays, and grades. Here’s the challenge: the university struggles to credit students for meaningful learning experiences like hackathons, industry networking, and peer collaboration because these achievements don’t fit neatly into the existing framework. Instead, students are graded A, B, C, and so on, as if real skills and growth could be standardized that way! 🤯 I believe universities should be embedded in the outside world, directly serving society and the economy. Yet, many are still disconnected, with administrative and evaluation systems that belong to another era. Schedules clash, collaboration is hard to track, and every university seems to be running on a different wavelength. So, here’s the good news from the expo: along with AI, robotics, and broadcasting tech, I saw systems that could support each student’s unique journey. Adaptive learning, skill tracking, tools for real-world credit—this technology can transform universities from isolated institutions into connected hubs that truly prepare students for life. PIM (Purpose in Motion) If you recall Huawei Seeds For The Future from my last post, PIM is in partnership with them for the Tech4Good Accelerator program. Model Foundation, one of its other active programs, trains university students how to evaluate an organization’s work and impact. Students will then present their findings to an 💹 investment committee and compete for a chance to win grant funding to support the organization they’ve researched. 33. The Lower Eastside Girls Club of New York A local organization that has contributed greatly to connect girls and gender-expansive youth to a healthy and successful future. 💖 Follow them and discover their free programs in the arts, STEM, digital media, wellness, civic engagement, entrepreneurship, and leadership. 34. BUILD  A student’s opportunity is too often limited by their zip code, race, and class. The organization offers training and curriculum guidance to educators thus equipping students with entrepreneurial skills sets that will lead to college, career, and life success. JA Worldwide As one of the world’s largest youth-serving nonprofits, JA delivers 🙌 hands-on, immersive learning in entrepreneurship, work readiness, and #financialhealth. Educators can inquire Junior Achievement USA presenters to teach in the classroom. How we got ꜰᴏᴜʀ universities to become exclusive partners as first-time founders with no track record and no fancy brands on our CVs. Chapter 1 of the fainin journey: working with universities Why? The timing seems right and we needed to find the ᴍᴏꜱᴛ ᴇꜰꜰɪᴄɪᴇɴᴛ way to onboard users and improve our product. We already had early signs of product-market fit but lacked the right unit economics. Timeline 2023: - August: Start the outreach to ᴅᴏᴢᴇɴꜱ of potential partners aka. online coffee dates - September & October: Keep everyone updated & execute like crazy - November: Start onboarding conversations & plans - End of November: Sign term sheet - December: Start signing contracts Phase 1: Online Coffee Dates As we were nobodies in the startup scene and had never talked to insitutional partners, we started talking to our existing universities. We got declined first, but the convinced our president to support us. We went on 40-50 coffee dates, having authentic and friendly conversations to get to know each other. Phase 2: Keep Everyone Updated & Execute Like Crazy After each coffee date, I asked if I could keep them updated on fainin's progress. Everyone said yes. Our goal was to build trust and conviction by delivering results over the next 2-3 months Kevin worked 24/7 on building the product with Abbas and Rizwan. I was meeting with our legendary expert Marvin and multiple interns (those days our good friend Mika), making cold calls to close our first customers with our MVP. It was tough but energizing. ꜱʜᴏᴜᴛᴏᴜᴛ ᴛᴏ Freie Universität Berlin & Kiel University ꜰᴏʀ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴀᴄᴛɪᴠᴇɴᴇꜱꜱ I sent an update email every 4 weeks, covering different areas, listing accomplishments, setting goals for the next four weeks, and always trying to overdeliver. These emails built trust and sparked interest. After my November update, we received so much interest that we decided to start the process. Phase 3: Start contract Conversations We created an LOI in three days and sent it to everyone we had talked to before. We had calls from 8 am to 8 pm, trying to keep everyone in the loop. I probably could write 10 LinkedIn posts just about this phase, it was intense, a constant up and down, the rollercoaster was rolling very fast. Some Learnings: - Keep the energy high in every call! - Be transparent with your weaknesses - Set a timeline and keep everyone on the same page - Tell a compelling story & build trust - make it a conversation. - Always be nice & never take anything personally, everybody is just doing their job. Key Learning: Execution is everything. Your traction is more important than your CV. Chapter 2: Scaling the public marketplace to +10k MRRs through SEO & backlink building
