So last month I directed 2nd Unit for two episodes of Silent Witness. 🌟 🕵️ For those who don’t know, the BBC Studios show is about forensic pathologists solving murder cases. It's seriously good fun. 🎥 2nd Unit directing involved directing four scripted scenes and then some cut-aways and establishing shots. Basically two days of stuff that the main director didn’t have capacity for. 🤓 Silent Witness is the longest running crime drama in the world. So, when it comes to production, they really know what they’re doing. 📹 When I direct for Zoya Films, we are usually working with a small, agile crew of 2-3 people. But on Silent Witness, my 2nd unit crew was 30 people strong. And that’s just the crew members actually on set. There’s also a whole office of production and logistical support. The show is like a well oiled machine that seems to have a momentum all of its own. At one point on the location recce, I (tentatively) asked the line producer if we could have a few supporting artists in the background for one of the shots. He said sure thing, will a minibus load be enough? Anyway, more importantly, it has great characters and thrilling stories. That’s why it regularly clocks in at 7m views or above.
