YL Ventures's recent 'CISO Reporting Landscape 2024' found that the board and senior executives are quite eager to learn about their organizations' cybersecurity postures. Especially in lieu of recent incidents, business leaders are starting to recognize the importance of shifting up and incorporating cyber risk managment into strategic planning. While this news is promising, the VC firm also discovered that CISOs are still struggling to deliver a message that resonates amongst those without a technical background. Yet, with 59.2%, 55.1%, and 38.8% of CISOs using phishing click rates, mean time to response (MTR), and security training completion rates, respectively, to measure cybersecurity program effectiveness, it's little wonder this challenge persists. Discussing phishing click rates, for instance, doesn't offer any tangible business implications to board members. On an abstract level, they recognize that the lower the rate, the less likely the organization is to suffer from an attack. From a strategic business enablement perspective, however, this information provides nothing. Budgets and resources cannot be allocated based on increased phishing awareness. By no means is this particular target unimportant. Indeed, heightened awareness is one of the key factors that helps to create a state of cyber resilience. But if the goal is to bridge the gap between cyber and the boardroom, this is not the KPI to leverage. To effectively demonstrate cybersecurity progress and gains, CISOs must be able to translate these metrics into terms that facilitate decision-making processes, providing all stakeholders - technical and non-technical alike—with a clear understanding of the level of investment required to enable innovation efforts to thrive without exceeding risk appetite levels. For better or for worse, the reality is that this feat is most easily accomplished when highlighting the monetary implications of various initiatives. Finance is the universal language of the corporate world, and, as cybersecurity practitioners, we should capitalize on this. When CISOs can transform the benefits of security control upgrade into a reduction in the organization's overall financial exposure, board members and the C-suite automatically grasp its inherent value. Better yet, if a CISO is able to illustrate a positive ROI, they're much more likely to obtain the necessary buy-in and resources. There are many other advantages that financial #CRQ offers, but at the end of the day, without a shared language, a solid foundation on which to build a bridge spanning the gap between cyber and the board will never exist. I hope that by next year, YL Ventures will find that the most commonly used cyber metrics in the boardroom have changed. Our cyber resilience depends on it. Big kudos to the entire YL Ventures team for their annual effort to bring us these crucial CISO insights! Ofer Schreiber #CISOcommunication #cyberriskquantification #cyberriskmanagement
