Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the theme this year is “land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.” As the foundation that makes all life on Earth possible, our land is currently threatened by drought, pollution, and climate threats 🌡️ 🏭 As UN Secretary-General António Guterres reminds us, “Inaction is too costly. But swift and effective action makes economic sense. #Nature-Based Solutions: A Crucial Approach for Disaster and Climate Change Resilience Our planet is under threat from various human activities that have disrupted its natural balance, leading to environmental degradation and loss of ecological harmony. The choices we make today will shape the future of our planet and determine its survival in the face of these challenges. This course highlights the remarkable restorative power of nature, emphasizing the importance of implementing nature-based solutions to heal and protect our ecosystems. Strategies such as reforestation, mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, and wetland restoration can significantly enhance resilience against environmental disasters. For example: Restored wetlands can prevent flooding and protect biodiversity. Mangroves and sand dunes act as natural buffers against storm surges and tsunamis. Rainwater harvesting systems reduce urban flooding while conserving water resources. Planting drought-resistant crops ensures food security in arid regions. By embracing these environmental management practices, we can restore our planet to its natural state, build resilience against climate change, and secure a sustainable future. Protecting the Earth is a shared responsibility that calls for collective action. As we continue to search for ways to combat the climate change emergency, it is important that we as a global community consider nature-based solutions as an important tool in fighting climate change. Nature-based solutions include “actions that protect, conserve, restore, sustainably use, and manage natural or modified ecosystems to deliver societal benefits” and are often underutilized in intergovernmental decision-making related to climate and health. TODAY IS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the day brings together millions of people in government, business, civil society, schools and celebrities engaging online and in-person to raise awareness and influence environmental action. In 2024, World Environment Day focuses on restoring land, halting desertification and building drought resilience. Up to 40 per cent of the world’s land is already degraded, while an estimated 3.2 billion people worldwide are negatively impacted by desertification, and more than three-quarters of the world’s population is expected to be affected by droughts by 2050. World Environment Day is the biggest international day for the environment, led by the United Nations Environment Programme and held annually on the 5th of June since 1973. This year the focus will be on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. All over the world, ecosystems are threatened. From forests and drylands to farmlands and lakes, natural spaces on which humanity’s existence depends are reaching a tipping point. To successfully restore land, it is essential to utilise a comprehensive approach that harnesses knowledge, determination, and ambition across all age groups. The current generations play a crucial role as they are witnessing firsthand the destructive impacts of environmental decline while also being the last to implement solutions to combat it and work towards achieving global objectives related to climate change and biodiversity. Although we cannot reverse time, we do have the ability to cultivate forests, rejuvenate water sources, and regenerate soils. We are the generation that can make a difference. As we observe #NationalNativeAmericanHeritageMonth, we honor the enduring wisdom of Tribal Nations who have been stewards of the land for generations and reflect on the disproportionate climate impacts they face—extreme weather, biodiversity loss, & threats to their traditional livelihoods. Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)—a blend of observation, experience, and adaptation—offers powerful strategies for combating climate change and building resilience. From controlled burns that rejuvenate ecosystems to preserving heirloom seeds that enhance food security, TEK demonstrates how nature-based solutions protect both the environment and cultural heritage. This approach acknowledges the deep connections between people, the land, and future generations. Tribal Nations, such as the Santa Clara Pueblo Tribe, exemplify resilience through their recovery from events like the 2011 Las Conchas Fire. Their practices highlight how combining ancestral knowledge with modern strategies fosters sustainable solutions for climate adaptation and mitigation. To truly address climate justice, we must learn from and support Tribal Nations in preserving and applying TEK—not just as an environmental strategy, but as a way to strengthen communities. Happy Environmental Day ☘️🌳🌲🍀 On this World Environment Day, we shine a light on the urgent need for land restoration. The degradation of land affects nearly half of the global population and threatens half of the world's GDP. Africa, in particular, faces severe challenges with widespread land degradation and desertification exacerbated by climate change. Restoring just 15% of degraded land could avoid up to 60% of expected species extinctions. By investing in land restoration, we can significantly enhance carbon storage, slow climate change, and build resilience against extreme weather. It's time for governments, organizations, and individuals to join forces and take concrete steps toward restoring our land.
