Three magnitude 3+ earthquakes in one week! The largest was just a few hours ago: a magnitude 3.8 in central South Australia, about 130km northeast of Coober Pedy. An M3.0 also occurred in the east of that state, and activity continues south of Maatsuyker Island TAS with an M3.2.

Here's the last 3 weeks of activity: 129 earthquakes detected in total. The largest was a magnitude 3.2 near Woods Point VIC, part of the ongoing sequence that began in late 2021. A magnitude 3.3 in South Australia fell just outside this map area, northeast of Lake Eyre.

103 Earthquakes in a week. The Permian is active. An article this week in the Austin American-Statesman highlighted the recent rumblings felt by the people in and around Scurry County, Texas. For folks not used to dealing with earthquakes I can't imagine that has been much fun. * https://lnkd.in/gqfDnv4c Pretty universally the quakes have been linked to ever-increasing volumes of produced water from oil and gas activity being injected into disposal wells and inducing slippage in the rocks below. Below, we use SeerAI's Geodesic platform to parse USGS earthquake events and produced water injection volumes for Scurry County, TX over time and it's definitely an eye-opener. Is there a link to increased earthquakes and oil and gas activities? Data suggests so.

What a fascinating story... and shows how powerful SeerAI software is.

Another cluster of earthquakes in the Permian last night and today. Looks like the magnitudes ranged from 2.5-3.9 (anything over 3 can typically be felt at the surface). During similar events the RRC has declared seismic response areas - effectively choking water disposal capacity in the catchment area - it will be interesting to see if that happens here too. Here's the operated wells in the area.

A M4.8 earthquake typically produces noticeable shaking, especially if it occurs near populated areas. While it may not cause significant damage to well-built structures, weaker buildings (like unreinforced masonry) and poorly constructed infrastructure could sustain minor to moderate damage. The shaking intensity would likely be felt by many people indoors and outdoors, causing objects to sway or fall. However, widespread devastation is unlikely at this magnitude, and the majority of injuries or damages would likely be minor. Nevertheless, it serves as a reminder of seismic risk in all regions of the US and the importance of preparedness for larger earthquakes.

Earthquake-induced soft-sediment deformation in the Pleistocene succession, Noarlunga Embayment, South Australia This, however, is the first record of an interpreted seismite in the St Vincent Basin, although its full extent is yet to be mapped. https://lnkd.in/gU4Gm9et

🌏 Did you know? Despite Australia not lying on a tectonic plate boundary, earthquakes still occur due to plate tectonic forces stressing the crust. These quakes happen when rocks deep underground break and move along fault lines. On average, Australia records about 100 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or more each year, with larger ones like the 1989 Newcastle earthquake occurring less frequently. Every decade, potentially damaging quakes of magnitude 6.0 or more, like the 1968 Meckering earthquake, are also experienced. For compliance peace-of-mind, turn to Blitz's industry-leading seismic cable and HVAC support systems. Our cable supports are preferred for commercial projects where installation speed & efficiency along with performance capability is required and where there is also a seismic and fire-rated component offering needed.
