The numbers are stark: Over 120,000 Australians are currently experiencing homelessness, with specialist services supporting 274,000 people in 2022-23 alone. With a national housing shortfall estimated at 200,000-250,000 dwellings, the challenge seems daunting. But there's hope. Catholic service providers are making remarkable strides in addressing this crisis. Organizations like Vinnies Victoria, CatholicCare Victoria Housing, St Mary's House of Welcome, Sacred Heart Mission, and VMCH to name a few are working tirelessly to expand both services and housing stock. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that cities can ban and penalize people from sleeping outdoors, including in vehicles. It is without question that Downtown Streets Team (DST) opposes this decision and will continue to support those experiencing homelessness with dignity and grace. Six out of nine justices voted to criminalize homelessness without providing solutions, despite the underwhelming amount of shelter resources across the nation. Arresting and fining individuals for trying to survive is not only cruel, but counterproductive and costly. We demand a future that protects the human rights of all people, regardless of identity or background. Sleeping is a basic need and right. Homelessness is not a crime. The recent achievements in Wigan, where nearly 200 long-term empty homes have been turned into living spaces, serve as a powerful example of what can be accomplished with dedication and innovative thinking. 💡 Collaborative efforts between council departments, the police, local developers, and charities to try to turn empty houses back into homes for people who need them most proved a major success for the homeless and the community as a whole.   Here at Land Attic, we believe that a combination of bringing life back into empty homes, regenerating our brownfield sites, and a long-term strategy of releasing new land for the development of new towns is a winning strategy for ending the housing crisis.
