Last week, I had the opportunity to visit clients in Palma and spend some time in the shipyard preparing yachts to go back into the water. They highly recommend experiencing a refit if you ever have the chance. Observing the number of projects and each contractor balancing their resources is fascinating, especially if you're obsessed with efficiency. The end goal of each project manager, captain and crew is to deliver an exceptional bespoke experience for the owner. However, conversations over the past decade have too often focused on delivering a proposal and a price with little focus on the value. Good captains and managers understand the importance of knowing the owners and understanding their vision and values. While management talks about minimum safe manning, mini-ISM, and makes decisions on price, it's important to focus on value and not just price when it comes to yacht management. The maritime industry thrives on a complex dance between crew, onshore teams, and ever-changing situations. In my experience, even the best plans can hit rough seas. One instance stands out: our ship management team faced a barrage of issues, from delayed maintenance to crew scheduling conflicts. From crew scheduling conflicts to maintenance delays, every ship onboard tests a team's resourcefulness. Inefficiencies and setbacks became constant companions. We tackled the root causes. You can’t build the plane while you are trying to fly it! A brilliant Associate said this to a client recently and I just love the analogy. It is very easy to start running with a project and in the eagerness to succeed you suddenly realise that fundamental elements are yet to be confirmed. I have been a serial offender of building planes whilst flying them in the past (with very mixed consequences!), however, consultancy has taught me to take a step back. The advice that clients pay for is to get an external view and this helps to keep things grounded until a project is ready to fly. This doesn’t necessarily mean delaying things, but it does mean that there is an order to events that give assurances of a safe and solid service. Love that I found a photo of someone actually flying a plane whilst it is being built...at least my attempts were only ever metaphorical! #businessdevelopment
