I’m completely exhausted! It’s been an incredible week, traveling across Atlanta to visit African stores and explore how we can connect them with sellers from Nigeria. After five days of going from one end of the city to the other, I’ve gained some valuable insights: 1. Profit, Not Patriotism, Drives Business Decisions: Like many other businesses, African store owners are primarily motivated by profit. They are more likely to stock products from the Caribbean or South America if those items are cheaper than their African counterparts. As a result, many African stores end up carrying more Caribbean products than those from their native Africa. 2. Quality Is a Major Concern: For most of these stores, quality is a key factor in product selection. They tend to prefer products that meet certain branding and quality standards—standards that many small African businesses can’t always meet. 3. Logistics and Restocking Is Important: Efficient logistics and the ability to easily restock are significant factors in a store’s success. Unfortunately, many Nigerian small businesses are falling behind in this area. Many still don’t understand the importance of keeping products in warehouses near their customers, opting instead for a “ship on demand” approach. This model relies heavily on air freight, which significantly increases the final cost per item. As I said, I’m really tired and will leave it at this for now—I can’t wait to board my flight.
