🔍 TikTok Tests Out Search Ads Given TikTok's billion plus audience, I'm sure a good amount of people are using TikTok's search function. After a series of beta tests, TikTok is now rolling out a Search Ads product for advertisers. TikTok Search is a different proposition from Google search. There's arguably less natural search behavior on TikTok vs. Google, and the content you're searching for on TikTok is the specific content type of TikTok videos, which may also feel like riskier content for certain brands. For TikTok, it's still a possible advertising upsell for brands. Starting with test budgets, brands might discover a new TikTok ad use case. These TikTok search ads are new ad inventory to drive revenue for the platform. And while I don't expect TikTok search behavior to overtake Google search, there are likely cost arbitrage opportunities for brands who pay a decent amount for specific search keywords in the much more mature Google search landscape. To cost conscious advertisers, TikTok search ads might be lower cost, higher reach, and better ROI than Google search ads. At least, for now... Meta has tried variations of search ads but none have taken off at any massive scale. The user behavior of high intent search queries doesn't really happen too much on Meta platforms. In fact, I wonder how much search activity actually happens on TikTok relative to Meta.
