The 51st installment of my original music series “A Minute In …” is devoted to my first love: playing drums. Learning the basics of keeping time and continually exploring the many ways that rhythm enriches music have been essential to my happiness and my livelihood for decades. Somewhere, somehow, drummers inexplicably became the butt of dumb jokes and gross misinformation, as in, “Anyone can play drums. All you do is hit things.” A stodgy extended family member also said to me, “If a drummer makes a mistake, no one will notice.” Those statements are completely inaccurate. The drummer is the backbone of any musical ensemble. When a drummer makes a mistake, it throws everyone out-of-sync. As for “all you do is hit things,” the famed drummer Bill Bruford (YES, King Crimson) nailed it when he said, “Striking something with intent to extract the most appropriate sound is not the same as hitting something as hard as possible.” Indeed, there’s a good reason that beginning drummers use small practice pads. It takes intense hand-eye coordination, mental focus and manual dexterity to practice rudiments on a small surface area. Kids or adults who are serious about learning to play drums quickly figure this out. Sure, anyone can “hit things,” but not everyone can be a drummer. Having just explained that good drumming takes control and finesse, I can also attest that it’s great physical exercise, which in turn, relieves stress and lowers blood pressure. And there’s more! Playing in a band requires teamwork and collaboration, and sometimes tremendous emotional restraint when fellow band members are lazy, egotistical or unreliable. Those are valuable interpersonal skills, don’t you agree?

Going to spend my Sunday with friends and self-care, but before I do, I wanted to share how I manage to reflect, resolve, and repeat myself to continuously improve. Managing emotions and regrounding in the present helps me gain insights into areas where unlearning and relearning is essential. Despite struggles with staying calm in the past, with dedication and support, I've found pride in my reflect, resolve, repeat abilities. Feeling deeply is both a blessing and a curse, depending on our reactions. Transforming negatives into positives empowers us to tackle anything in life. Coping with strong emotions and nurturing self-awareness through creativity has been crucial for me. Creativity knows no bounds; simple acts like doodling or admiring others’ creations can evoke profound feelings. Embracing emotions is key to kindness, empathy, inspiration, and self-connection. Music is my lifeline, offering solace in tough times and celebrating successes. I curated a playlist themed around empathy and kindness, a reminder that we're not alone in our struggles. Life, like an album, balances happy and sad songs. Until the sad songs pass, find what works for you to navigate through the moment. Stay strong, we're in this together! 🎶🌟

Need a productivity boost without the stress? I just dropped a lofi playlist on YouTube, blending tech and creativity in perfect harmony. Using tools like Sora for visualizers, SUNO for music generation, CapCut for editing, Leonardo for design, and a little help from my custom GPTs, this project is a true tech-meets-vibes collaboration. Lofi isn’t just background noise—it’s a productivity hack. Studies show it can help improve focus, reduce anxiety, and keep you in a flow state while you work or study. Check out the playlist, hit play, and let the smooth beats and dreamy visuals do the rest.
