The answer in Milan seems to be a clear "no". 🖼 This week Chiquita with IGPDecaux launched the campaign "Pop by Nature", a reinterpretation of the most pop fruit of the moment through the colors of Brazilian artist Romero Britto. Until the end of the month, the campaign will be onair with a domination at Milan Cadorna metro station, dOOH in the city and a personalized bus shelter in Piazza Castello that offers the opportunity to take home a poster - which is a true work of art! 🎢 This is just the beginning: in April a Pop Up newsstand will open in Brera with representations of Romero Britto's work and the brand will also be present at the Milan Design Week 2024 with the immersive experience in the "Chiquita House". ❓What makes the Chiquita campaign relevant? ✅ Reach: coverage in Milan's key locations maximizes reach and positioning in Cadorna also catches the attention of those who travel to the city for business reasons or tourism ✅ Earned media: it's so pop that you want to share it on social media and the media talks about it! The Power of Aggressive Brand Strategies 💼🚀 It is clear that these Spanish brands are using very effective marketing tactics to generate interest and get people talking about their products. However, it raises important questions about the ethics and cultural tendencies of materialism. What message are we sending when promoting impulsive consumerism and search for recognition through the possession of fashionable products? I think these brands could consider a more balanced strategy. Aggressive marketing can generate results in the short term, but at what cost? As a billboard critic, I often see high-impact locations, but sometimes, well, nature throws a curveball. Today's case in point: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines’s luxurious brand image gracing a #billboard that seems to be a favorite pitstop for our feathered friends. Now, while a bird dropping might seem like a minor inconvenience, for a premium brand like KLM, it can definitely detract from the message. Here's some friendly advice to keep those wings pointed in a different direction: 📌Invest in a Self-Cleaning Coating: A special coating can be applied to the billboard that makes it less attractive to birds. 📌 Strategic Landscaping: Planting bird-repellent shrubs or installing bird spikes around the billboard perimeter can create a less inviting landing zone. 📌 Embrace Technology: Low-powered lasers or sonic repellents can be discreetly installed to deter birds without harming them (coexist) Case Study: The Mc Donald's Experiment Remember the infamous "McDonalds with the Arches Covered in Pigeons" photo that went viral in 2015? It was a PR nightmare! Luckily, McDonalds took action. They installed a special, invisible coating on the arches, significantly reducing bird activity. The power of visuals 🌟 When I was solo-traveling in Japan a couple of years back, one of the many neat things that stood out to me was their heavy use of visuals. Many restaurants would showcase plastic made replicas of their most popular dishes in a glass case in front of their store (these are called ''Shokuhin Sampuru'' in Japanese). They looked real and it caught my eye - which is the point of it! This is just an example of how important visuals are in making stronger connections with consumers.
