One sign of my aging, or one indicator of my mental wellbeing, is my increasing aversion to #acronyms, especially in the cultural sector. How many of you in Italy attend a GAM (Gallery of Modern Art, which in English would be GMA or GoMA)? Also, MoMAs can be found everywhere in the world. Of course, there is a primacy of birth, but still, the 'poor' Museums of Modern Art outside NYC must strive to define their identity despite the 'cool' acronym. In Italy, we have come up with such funny names that may be meant to bridge the gap between the institutions and the public, but MAXXI, MAMBO, M9 (an acronym recently shared with an unfortunate bear), or MACRO (well, Rome maintains an aura of velleitarian imperial malish greatness, at least in the artistic field). Indeed, the use of these quirky acronyms can sometimes create confusion for potential visitors, especially those who are not accustomed to what can be "found inside" the museum AND the acronym.
The ones I just listed at least are the easiest to pronounce. Sometimes, instead, we come across really unpronounceable and incomprehensible names, chosen in pursuit of brevity and of "coolness".
Maybe time has come to regain clarity over quickness, comprehension over sensitivity, and contents over image.
To this regard, I found out an interesting paper of some years ago. But sometimes ageing, like me and like wine, is just an improvement.
