In 2024, Sempervirens Fund launched a new Forest Fellowship program. Through this program, Sempervirens Fund invites creative and curious thinkers to explore redwoods with us, tell their and the community’s stories, and deepen our insights into what makes redwoods so vital to the natural world and the humanity within. The inaugural Forest Fellow is Jane Kim, a visual artist, science illustrator, and the founder of Ink Dwell studio. Together, Sempervirens Fund and Kim have already collaborated on visual illustrations for a series of reports on the intersection of redwood trees and climate change, as well as Curiosity Stories films about Kim’s journey to create new works of art inspired by the cut rounds of an old-growth redwood stump. Observations on Race and Power: Reflections from the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta In America, and particularly in my birth city of Atlanta, we live in a racialized society. Before race becomes about people, it is fundamentally about power. This power is made up of influence—our relationships—and affluence—our financial resources. Much like a race in sports, these societal races result in winners and losers, creating a hierarchy that dictates access to resources and opportunities. It’s not by coincidence that we are categorized by "race." I was recently at an ADL event at Atlanta’s Georgia Aquarium, observing a remarkable scene. In this enclosed environment, I watched large whales, smaller fish, stingrays, and turtles coexist peacefully. There was no fighting for space or resources—everything simply existed in harmony. It struck me then how we, as humans, who consider ourselves superior to other life forms, often fail to embody this same peaceful coexistence. This led me to reflect on our own behavior. We possess the intelligence to know what is right, yet too often we fail to act on it. This is the essence of stupidity—not a lack of knowledge, but a refusal to act on what we know to be true. We know that divisiveness and racial hierarchies are wrong. We know that the pursuit of power at the expense of others leads to societal discord. Yet, we continue on this path. If we consider the aquarium's ecosystem, where diverse species live in harmony, we might find a lesson for humanity. It’s time for us to recognize that the fight for superiority based on race is not only unnecessary but detrimental to our collective existence. We have the power to change, but it requires us to move beyond our historical and societal constructs of race and power. So, I ask you: if a diverse group of marine life can exist without conflict, why can't we, as the supposedly superior species, do the same? Especially here in Atlanta, a city with a rich history and a vibrant blend of cultures, we have an opportunity to lead by example. Let’s engage in this conversation about race relations and explore how we can transcend the power dynamics that divide us.

Well Rhema Vaithianathan, you saw this coming or maybe you gave them the idea! The Government has cut humanities and social science from the Marsden Fund. That's a major move. Having worked at the Royal Society for ten years, I can imagine the major ramifications this has practically and spiritually for that organisation, which is very much set up as a place that supports the various fields of sciences, social science, and humanities - and the interaction between them. They will likely continue to do so, but face the prospect of administering a fund on behalf of the government that cuts a swathe of their constituents and members out of the loop when it comes to actually funding their research. Marsden is no longer the country's key blue skies research fund, but will be used for the purposes of pursuing growth and economic development. Wow. This reaction from Professor Nicola Gaston via the Science Media Centre sort of sums it up... "I am horrified by today’s announcement. I am absolutely disgusted by the way that the kind of science I, and my colleagues do – as physical scientists involved in research that is purposeful, focused on solutions to climate and sustainability challenges, that do have real economic value – is being weaponised against our colleagues in the humanities and the social sciences. "The work that our colleagues in the humanities and social sciences do is incredibly important. We can do all the work in developing clean technologies we want, but if we don’t understand the barriers to people purchasing that tech? It becomes useless."

“Why are insects so important to earth’s ecosystems?” is the essential curricular question in our new program at the American Museum of Natural History, Beyond Elementary Explorations in Science (BEES). BEES educators Margaret Hoffman and Jacob Sienko, co-teaching with the teachers from the visiting classes, first introduce students to what #insects are and to what #ecosystems are. Then they help students understand how insects interact with other species; and what roles insects play in ecosystems. Finally, the educators focus on insects’ deep importance to ecosystems. One very important way we are trying to understand what students learned during this week-long experience is to look at their work; specifically at the kinds of #models they created in the program. Here is an example of a model of an ecosystem developed by a student on Day 1 and again on Day 5. See how the model from Day 5 now illustrates an understanding of how insects interact in and are critical to ecosystems: BEES Staff: Linda Curtis-Bey, Ed.D., Alison Sheehan, Naina Abowd, Margaret Hoffman, Jacob Sienko; BEES Research and Evaluation: Anna MacPherson #museums #programs #STEM #learning

🐦✨ Fascinating Findings About Crows! ✨🐦 In a groundbreaking study, scientists have unveiled that crows possess an incredible ability: recursion! This cognitive skill, often associated with language and grammar, showcases how these intelligent birds can handle complex tasks and concepts. At DeBoss, we’re excited to explore the cognitive abilities of crows as we work towards training them to help clean up our environment. Their remarkable intelligence not only surprises us but also highlights the potential for creating a cleaner, more sustainable world. Curious to learn more about how crows think? For the first two weeks of December, we’ll be working on our collaborative toolkit, Moving Together / Arriving Together! Our artists will be creating Seeds for the SeedPool Gallery and uploading throughout the residency, so follow our progress daily, or check back on the 16th when the residency is complete. We can’t wait to share our collaborative findings with you! SeedPool Gallery: https://lnkd.in/gUWGuqKh -use the Search by Project field on the left! About MT/AT: ALP is uniquely positioned as an organisation dedicated to building bridges of communication and exchange; and this has already begun to manifest in some deep and rich thinking around the potential and ALP’s role in this landscape. This project allows us to expand this circle of research/consultation, to a larger sphere of BIPOC artists/organisations, from whom we can source additional/best practices for collaborative creation working methodologies, and coalesce and test them amongst our peers. We will be working with six themes: Understanding decolonisation Clarifying collaborative pathways Creating common ground Building equitable relationships Capacity building, support, and agency Collaborative decision-making and co-creation #SeedPool #ArrivalsAlum
