Reflections!! Let's Congratulate Dr Belinda Rathogwa, PhD (Dr.B) On the 20th of July 2024, I had the honour of speaking at the celebratory party of my PhD student who recently graduated. The brief was: "Good Afternoon 🌻 I hope you are well! I would like to ask if you would kindly share a few words of wisdom for the new Dr (5min) at Belinda’s party this weekend?" by Lesego Ndlebe I felt honoured and excited, but I paused a bit when I saw "Words of Wisdom." I asked myself, "Have I lived long enough? Do I have hair gray enough to share words of wisdom?" My answer was a definite yes, despite the small voice trying to lie to me, saying, "No, you don't have words of wisdom." From that moment, I began thinking about what I would say to the new Dr, and I landed on something I have observed many struggle with #SELF-PROMOTION, which tends to be particularly challenging for women. The Words of Wisdom "Your graduation certificate won't speak for itself, and your PhD thesis stored on your laptop unfortunately doesn’t either. So, who needs to talk? The graduate. How will opportunities seeking PhDs know you have one unless you tell them? You need to share your achievements with everyone who cares to listen. When people know what you have achieved and what you can do, only then can they recommend you and mention your name in the right places. Don't let anyone tell you that you're not humble when you talk about your achievements. It's called self-promotion, not bragging/pride. It’s hard to earn a PhD. You can’t endure such pain and come back, put the certificate in your drawer, and keep quiet about it" Once again, welcome to the NQF level 10 crew, Dr. Belinda. I learned a lot from you, and your attitude and openness to learning will take you far. 🎉Officially a Graduate! 🎉 I’m proud to share that I’ve completed my Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Business from Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), achieving a Second Class Honours Grade 1! 🎓 The final year of my studies proved to be the most challenging of all. Over the past four years, I completed 46 modules, probably over 100 assignments and exams, and a thesis—an intense journey that taught me much more than just business principles. It was also a deep dive into teamwork, resilience, and personal growth. I’ve always set high expectations for myself, and while I met many of them, this year reminded me that not everything goes as planned. Initially, I felt disappointed for not reaching my goal of a First Class Honours, but I soon realised that my worth and knowledge aren’t defined by one outcome. This past year was more challenging than the prior three, and that’s okay. I’m proud of my accomplishments, especially in the areas I cared deeply about, and the hard work I poured into my thesis and final projects was truly rewarding to see reflected in my results. Through these experiences, I also formed invaluable friendships and connections. It’s exciting to think about the different paths we’ll all be taking now. I’ll always be grateful to my TUS lecturers for their patience and support and to my friends and family for standing by me through every high and low. On Thursday, we gathered one last time to celebrate our achievements. It was the perfect way to close this chapter and look forward to the next with a renewed sense of purpose.
