Please help me understand! A patient with metastatic pancreatic cancer is looking for a clinical trial in Germany. And she is ineligible 😔 Because she had previous treatments. And of course, she had a previous treatment. She lives in Germany, a country with one of the best standards of care provided to patients worldwide. She was not offered a trial as a first option. Just a reminder only 10% of doctors worldwide are investigators too and the rest are not usually aware of all the trial options out there (not even mentioning how likely it is for them to recommend patients to trials). What I struggle to understand is: Why on Earth there is no option for patients on previous treatments to participate in clinical trials??? Why not a washout period instead of no option? Can't Science figure out any way to get meaningful data while patients can still try other treatments before a trial? Anyone with answers, pls 🙏 I am fighting for better clinical trials for years now. Then again patients like her with small kids are out there fighting for their lives. September 22nd marked #WorldCMLDay, a day to raise awareness of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, the disease that was the incentive behind Andaman7. In 2007, our founder and CEO, Vincent Keunen, was diagnosed with CML and 3 months later, his son, Pierre, was diagnosed with bone cancer. While, thanks to developments in medicine, Vincent’s cancer was easy to cure with one pill a day for the rest of his life, Pierre’s was a different story - 2 years of treatment which ended with him losing his leg. Although both men are now well, their treatment journey couldn’t have been more different. This was the catalyst for Vincent to create Andaman7, a social project by patients for patients that enables users to own their health data. And, only when patients explicitly consent, this data can be shared with researchers to help the pharma industry deliver faster, more cost-effective clinical trials for new and improved treatments. So why is breast cancer prevention, screening, and treatment even more critical in low-to-middle income countries (LMICs)? Years ago, this form of cancer was one of the most common causes of cancer deaths among women in the U.S. But between 1955 and 1992, the incidence and death rates declined by more than 60%. Credit goes to the development of the Papanicolaou test—commonly known as the Pap smear or Pap test. One of the most effective cancer screening tests available, the Pap smear helps clinicians identify cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and remove it before it progresses to cervical cancer. Breast cancer remains a significant health threat. Low-and-middle-income countries (LMIC) bear the highest burden, where more than two-thirds of breast cancer deaths occur[1]. 🙂 *The good news*: patients receiving a diagnosis of non-dysplastic Barrett's esophagus (NDBE) have a population-based risk of progression to high-grade dysplasia or cancer of 0.6% per year. (Keep reading ↓↓) 😧 *The bad news*: There are a LOT of NDBE patients out there, and when you multiply a small risk times a large population it means hundreds of these patients are going to progress. 😁 *The better news*: An independent publication confirms that NDBE patients who receive a #TissueCypher high-risk score are 18x more likely* to progress to high-grade dysplasia or cancer, enabling upstaging of care BEFORE cancer forms. 💙Prostate Cancer Awareness 💙 Prostate cancer occurs when the cells in the prostate gland grow out of control and is one of the most common cancers affecting men, especially Native Americans. It is important to note that it can be found at an early stage, which is why we should be aware of the risk factors, signs, and symptoms. The screening recommendations may vary depending on the type of risk an individual is at. Still, it is crucial to talk to a provider if you are experiencing any symptoms you are concerned about. With all that in mind, raising awareness can encourage more men to get screened and seek early treatment. It is pivotal for men to know how to reduce their risk.
