Thrilled to receive a @zeroproject Award for our project supporting Micro-Entrepreneurs (ME) with complex disabilities! The programme matches already existing micro-entrepreneurs with deafblindess or complex disabilities with a mentor who supports them to develop and grow their business further to increase their income. Through this support, 28 of the 36 MEs we support are now able to lead a more independent and fulfilling life. Zero Project is working for a world with zero barriers. Worldwide, the Zero Project finds and shares solutions that improve the daily lives and legal rights of all persons with disabilities, as intended and encouraged by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. #InclusiveFutures funded by UK Aid #ZeroProjectAwardee2025 #ZeroCon25 #Zerobarriers

Celebrating 25 Years of Better Housing Choices! The Olmstead Decision’s impact on housing: * Live Where You Want: People with disabilities can choose to live in the communities instead of institutions. * Help at Home: Support services come to you, making it easier to live independently. * Fair Treatment: Olmstead and the ADA limit discrimination. They help create communities where people with disabilities can live next to their friends and families without disabilities. We’ve made progress, but people with disabilities can still end up living in institutions. The main reason is because there are more supports available in institutions even though it is less costly to offer these services in the community. Let's keep working for a more inclusive future where people can access the supports they need in their homes! Yesterday was 3rd December. It was the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 🧑🦽. Known by this name, this day is only 17 years old. Twenty years ago the 3rd December would have been called the International Day of Disabled People 🦽🧑. In 2007 the UN changed the official name of the day to fall in line with the language of the UNCRPD, which had been adopted the year prior. If this day was observed in New Zealand only, chances are it would still be called a day for Disabled People. Because here in New Zealand - at least for now - we have embraced identity-first language. This is a move towards disability pride, and a reflection of the social model of disability. Regardless of whether you use identity-first or person-first language, of far greater importance is our collective action to realise the theme of the day. To amplify the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future. That's our kind of future. Is it yours? #IDPWD, #Ourkindoffuture, #Volition Image Description: Logo for International Day of Persons with Disabilities

It’s International Day of Person’s with Disabilities. This year’s theme is “amplifying the leadership of person’s with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future”. If society is going to amplify the leadership of disabled people, we need to feel welcomed at the table. We need to be part of the conversation. We need to be included at every level. We need to feel valued. We need our capabilities to be recognised. We need people to listen to us. We need everyone to make a commitment to accessibility. I choose to use my platforms to raise awareness because I want to help other fellow disabled people, and educate the world on disability. We can all take the time to learn. We can all do better. Striving for an inclusive and sustainable future is about recognising that disabled people can’t do it alone. We must all play our part. #IDPWD #IDPWD2024 #IDPD

34 years ago today, on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. From physical barriers to barriers to employment, the ADA has proved to be a monumental stepping-stone in the fight for equality and equal access because it requires that state and local governments, as well as businesses and nonprofits, make accommodations for people with all abilities. For people who are blind, DeafBlind, and blind with other disabilities, the ADA has helped mandate access to information that otherwise may not have been accessible. #ADA #AmericansWithDisabilities #ADA34
