I just came across a very interesting article in Nature from last year which writes about the energy savings potential when using quantum computing to train a large transformer model in comparison to a regular supercomputer. While the article is clear about the work still to be done to get to an agreed approach how to measure energy efficiency on a quantum computer, it also hints at very promising results. The latest ESG reports from companies such as Microsoft and Google show the increased energy consumption due to AI. - 6x power for Data centres in 10 years - The National Grid has predicted a sixfold increase in data centre power usage in the next decade, driven by the likes of quantum computing and AI, reports BBC News. "Future growth in foundational technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing will mean larger scale, energy-intensive computing infrastructure" The National Grid believes that now is a critical moment for transforming the power network to cope with significant future needs, also including supporting more and more Electric cars. But Data Centres, especially those running increasing AI workloads, are particularly power hungry. In the Republic of Ireland (where a number of tech firms have European HQs), electricity used in data centres is apparently up 400% since 2015. Energy usage (and infrastructure) doesn’t necessarily get the airtime that AI use-cases do, but it’s an interesting (and some would say essential) consideration, if the rapid growth of AI is to continue.
