Is the modern day Quantity Surveyor essentially a Financial Controller as opposed to a QS in the traditional sense?
In my experience of working on large projects (this is not a criticism), as a QS, many times I felt like an Accountant and often a Lawyer.
I felt like a QS when I got my wages though. 😅
Of course Cost Management, Management accounts, CVR's. Liabilities, Accruals and Payments are all vital.
Contract Administration, understanding the contract, working the contract through its various mechanisms, agreeing change and still maintaining a relationship both upstream and downstream are also very important and definately take skill. It can be tricky to tell a subcontractor that you are witholding say 5% of their payment application and in the next breath ask them to take on additional works.
All of the above functions are important, vitally important in order to run a business successfully, but whats missing?
Theres no measurement, quantification or practical skills. And there was no room made for them.
Its like an Engineer not doing any setting out...a block layer not laying blocks..
This was one of the main reasons why I wanted to establish Take off Bill®, to use these skills and offer the service of Take offs, Bills of Quantities and Measurement to clients.
Do you measure or practice measurement regularly, does it play a role in your day to day job?
