Today, we celebrate Juneteenth and reflect on the broader landscape of diversity and equity within the DevOps and cybersecurity fields. While we honor this significant day in history, it's crucial to acknowledge the work still needed to achieve true equality in our industry. According to the International Consortium of Minority Cybersecurity Professionals (ICMCP), Black professionals account for around 9% of the cybersecurity workforce in the United States. The tech world isn't immune to the ongoing disparities, and it's important for us all to foster inclusivity and representation in our field. As we celebrate Juneteenth, let’s commit to taking meaningful steps toward a more equitable future in tech. I've been following the influx of posts from Black Hat and DEFCON with a mix of curiosity and concern. It’s disheartening to see how many attendees seem genuinely surprised by marketing that objectifies women. Plus the number of men posting "it was just a simple marketing mistake" or how we are all so "sensitive". Honestly, it's nothing new. This is cybersecurity—a field that has long been dominated by a bro culture that consistently overlooks and mistreats women. Did we think things had changed? These events, often referred to as "Summer Camp," are notorious for their focus on booze and parties rather than professionalism. Let's not kid ourselves; these conferences have never been about creating an inclusive or respectful environment. The culture of cybersecurity needs a serious overhaul. Oh, but the 'companies' in question apologized. Just like they did last year and the year before that. I am over apologies. If not, you might risk being e-cloned by an AI. Hello, everyone! 👋🏾 Was October wild? Did you celebrate both Black History Month and Cybersecurity Awareness Month? The overlap is amazing. Did you know that only 26% of cybersecurity professionals come from minority backgrounds? However, every one of those 26% who work in the field is truly remarkable, especially since 62% of minorities in cybersecurity have a master's degree or higher. I have a passion for academia; I can’t help it. One undeniable truth about diversity is that it creates better teams. Why do you think the Avengers work so well together? 🛡️ Building diverse teams shouldn’t be just about being "woke." Without diverse perspectives, we may overlook potential threats. Exactly, try playing Fortnite with one eye closed. Shouldn't different perspectives lead to better problem-solving? Think of it like having a Swiss Army knife instead of just a regular blade. Some might ask, "Isn't this just reverse discrimination?" or "Shouldn't we just hire the best person for the job?" The truth is, we might miss out on exceptional candidates if we don’t broaden our search. It’s like only checking one streaming service for shows—you risk missing some great content! TLDR = glad Palo Alto CEO owned the error of his team. I sympathize with the two women who became the objects of the failed marketing. Finally, my peers; man! I thought we were smarter than this. To the CEO of Palo Alto. First, glad you owned your company’s error. This is not 1954 and that was unacceptable. I do hope you also apologized to the women your company objectified. Even if I had been present, this debacle would not have won “market share” with me, in fact it would have had the opposite effect on me. I would have left and avoided your “area”. To BlackHat – Ok I get it it’s Vegas. That might bring a certain level of “latitude”, for some. However, it is still just a town in the United States in 2024. Perhaps you should have seen it and said something to Palo Alto. I can’t justify a ticket if this is a normative practice. To the women who wore lampshades. Know that God the Father loves you. You are of infinitely more value than what you were “paid” to do. To my counterparts and peers across the “business” of cybersecurity. One of the reasons cyber appeals to me is it is intellectually challenging. We as a community are better than this, at least we should be. As #blackhistorymonth and #cybersecurityawarenessmonth come to a close, I thought to share my thoughts on the power in being “only”. Throughout much of my life, I’ve grown accustomed to standing out. As a child, I was often the tallest in the class, and would try to hunch down to blend in with the rest of my peers. I remember my dad often encouraging me to stand tall and revel in my height. Since then, I’ve found myself in male dominated settings due to my interests/passions. I studied Computer Engineering and Cybersecurity where most of my colleagues were men. As a practising cybersecurity professional, I’m part of the 25% of women that make up this workforce, 9% of whom are black - talk about a double minority! At times, it may seem easier to be a wallflower, but what good does that serve? It’s really like putting a bucket over a bright light. So I continuously remind myself (and others) that being ONLY is a superpower rather than a limitation, and I wield this advantage to contribute fresh insights, provide thought leadership, nurture communities I’m part of, and inspire other individuals who might feel like outsiders, especially those in their formative years, whether in age or career stage. Here’s a note to anyone who’s going against the grain, swimming against the current and thinking it’s too hard, not worth it, or stressful. Or those trying to gain entry into rooms that seem to be protected by unscalable security doors and heavyweight bodyguards - there’s room for you! You belong there! By shining your light, you’re inspiring someone else to shine theirs and believe it’s possible! Don’t cower, or try to fade into the background - revel in your ‘ONLYness’ - it’s your superpower!
