Google, Opera, and other developers have created an alliance accusing Microsoft of limiting web browser choice on Windows through "dark patterns" — that is, making it difficult to switch away from Edge. They want the EU to take action. Groups like these aren't new. But they're gaining traction (see the ones that called for changes to Apple and Google app stores) and might get the ear of regulators that previously didn't consider Microsoft an issue given its relatively small slice of the overall browser market. I'd expect Microsoft to fight this, but it might have to walk delicately when the Alliance is claiming that some browser developers don't want to be named due to a "fear of retaliation." For a while, I’ve been trying to reduce the time I spend watching videos on YouTube that are irrelevant to the reason I opened the app in the first place. This is because the recommended videos are very distracting; the need for entertainment is triggered the moment I see those flashy thumbnails. It’s easy to solve this on a computer using feed eradicator plugins for Chrome, but there’s no such thing (that I know of) for the official YouTube app on my iPhone. Then it hit me, “all I have to do is use the algorithm to my advantage.” I created multiple YouTube brand accounts with the same Gmail and dedicated specific purposes for each. For example: entertainment, education, music. Now, I leave my default account set to music or education, so when I open the app, my recommendations are either React tutorials or the latest songs by the Spanish singer Beret. The curiosity to watch some random recommended video of people playing Yu-Gi-Oh! (yes, that’s my latest eye-candy) no longer exists because the algorithm will never show me those videos since I won’t watch them on those profiles. If I want to watch a funny video, the extra step of switching the account gives me more time to consider it. I believe little changes like that can bring big results in the long run. Yesterday, Coldplay tickets sold out in like 1 second while most of us were stuck in queues with over a million people. BMS servers crashed at 12PM, and by the time they announced another surprised show, those tickets vanished too—before anyone even blinked. Nope, I didn’t get the tickets either, but it reminded me of a very fond memory of Coldplay which I wanna share on LinkedIn. Might not be the best platform for a childhood story but here we go: 8 years ago, when I was in class IX. Coldplay released the music video of “Hymn for the Weekend” on YouTube. The video was shot in India, with Sonam Kapoor made a cameo in it which was a big rave. It was a huge deal in my school—everyone was buzzing about Coldplay and I didn't even know this brand existed. This was pre-Jio days, when internet was super expensive. My family had an Internet Dongle of IDEA EDGE where we were paying 2GB data per month for ₹1000, and once the data ran out, my mom refused to recharge. (yeah 2gb for the entire month, I have 2GB per day sim now for comparison) I remember downloading a movie once, and let’s just say, my mom wasn’t too thrilled when she couldn’t browse cooking recipes on google for a whole month after that 😅 I couldn't even watch any YouTube videos 1) the buffering speed was too low and 2) I would have been out of data in few hours. So when music video of “Hymn for the Weekend” came out, I couldn't stream the video, so I downloaded the song from songs.pk and listened to it on repeat. My crush at the time was a big Coldplay fan, but she had never seen their music video—she didn't have an internet dongle like me. So, in a bold move to impress her, I took the courage and sacrificed my monthly allowance of Internet and I downloaded the whole music video in, mind you, 1080p HD! It was 1GB file and it took me an entire night to download it. I loaded it onto a pen drive, and gave it to her. She was so happy she cried and hugged me out of joy. Definitely one of young Tanmay’s smoothest moves, all thanks to Coldplay. :) So YES OF COURSE- I was super upset when I was unable to get the tickets yesterday. :( But you know what it's fine, even if I don’t make it to the show, I’ve still got that epic memory from Class 9. And honestly, that’s priceless. But, if anyone’s feeling generous and has a spare ticket, I’m ready to "Fix You" up with some gratitude and "Adventure of a Lifetime" vibes. Either way, it’s all "Paradise" in my head. 🎶
